ArcDroid pen attachment

Post by Oldbike99 »

I see that one can purchase a spring loaded holder for a sharpie marker to allow you to draw out and inspect files prior to cutting material.

I think this is a good idea, but the ones I’ve seen mount in the torch holder. If I understand correctly, Arcdroid recommends re-calibrating any time you remove the torch from the holder. Never mind that it is a hassle.

I have an alternative. Most of the dimensions are not overly critical. As you can see by the pictures, it is a piece of 5/8” aluminum, about 5-1/4” long, drilled 1/4” about 5” deep and threaded about 1/4” deep with 5-16 NC thread, followed with a .095 hole drilled the rest of the way. About 4-1/4” of the OD is turned down to .472. The end has a random, slight bevel.

I drop a Parker .7 gel pen insert down in it, followed by a 1.25” scrap of aluminum spacer( any diameter that slides in the bore. Mine is .245”). Follow this with a small spring and a 5/16 cap screw to lightly tension the ink cartridge.

I then remove the stylus and insert the pen. I make no changes to the pierce or cut heights, and just place a tablet on the desktop.

The only thing I would change would be to make the body about another 1/2” longer so that it sticks all the way through the holder and slip an o-ring on it to retain it just to be sure it remains seated all the way up, although I’ve had no problem with it slipping down.

If I had thought of this prior to ordering, I would have gladly purchased an additional holder, so that I could leave the stylus in place. But I hate to pay the shipping now, just for that convenience.

I'm sure you saw this at your other thread - but here is a sharpie pen holder that simply clips onto the torch body. So no need to remove the torch.

That's a very clever design! I would love to see some pictures of your new pen holder mounted into your Arcdroid, and maybe even short video showing it in action.

Thanks for sharing your design.

I can do that, but there isn’t much to see. It’s very simple. Perhaps in the next few days. Other people have asked to see my “setup”, but I believe one of the merits of ArcDroid is its portability. If I want to draw on my kitchen table, it’s less than 40 lbs.

this is one I designed to attach not using the torch type mount, using a flat bar stock.

That's a nice one that Tom shows. I bought one from him several years go and built a mount to use it on my cnc router table. The same mount also fits several of my engravers. Here is a picture of the mount with a diy engraver attached. The mount fits over the spindle - so easy to take on and off.

If you have access to a 3D printer, here are free stl files for the pen holder and nut very similar to the ebay product. Designed to fit a Sharpie to a PTM-60 torch. No need to remove and reset the torch. Only additional piece needed is a spring between the end of the Sharpie and the nut.

With that design I just change the center bearing section for either the flat bar or torch mounting. Also a similar design for a drag knife and gasket cutter. A plus for CAD software keeping the dimensions from one part when creating another of different shapes or function.
