Inkscape - Edit a Farm House Sign

Post by adbuch »

I recently helped out one of the members with his farm house sign project. I did the original edit using Design Edge, but Guy was interested to see how he could accomplish the same thing using Inkscape. Here are some screen shots showing more about the project and the editing process.

David

This is how his file looked when I opened it with Design Edge.

Here are several methods that can be used for bending the letters to fit a curve. Guy had already heavily edited the original text, so it was now in Vector format and the Inkscape "Text, Put on path" tool could not be used.

Great work David. You spent a lot of time on this. Even the screen shots take time. You are the "Node Editor King"
Thanks.

Thanks TJ! It does take some time to go thru the editing process and document it with annotated screen shots. It's also a way for me to learn a few new things as well. Here is a photo of Guy's finished project. The overall width is around 19". It would have cut better for the details at a larger size, but I do expect that the recipients of this gift were very happy with it.

I can see this one clearly, thank you

For reducing the node count is that done in design edge? Emachineshop has group, this doesn’t have any effect on line or node count even though it does make the selected part one piece

Yes - I used the Design Edge Smooth tool in combination with the Join tool to reduce the total node count. Inkscape has a smooth tool called "Simplify" - but the original file had too many nodes and it would crash Inkscape when I tried to open it. Here are some screen shots I just did using Design Edge to edit your original file using the Join tool and Smooth tool.

By the way - I'm not sure exactly which programs you used for which parts of your edit. Perhaps you went back and forth between eMachineShop and Inkscape. In general - when you save a file as dxf and then import to Inkscape, it will have many more nodes than it you had saved it from the original program as svg and then imported that svg to Inkscape. I see this all the time when I export as dxf from Design Edge and import the dxf to Inkscape.

Whatever your process was, you somehow managed to generate lots of nodes in the process.

Guy - I have created some step-by-step screen shots showing how to use Inkscape to disassemble the original Etsy file and add your custom features.

Here is a good example to show why you possibly ended up with so many nodes. In general - dxf files have more nodes than svg files. If you save a file from Inkscape as dxf and open it with another program, and then save it from that other program as dxf and import it back into Inkscape - you will find that your total node count has increased significantly.

I don't know if you went back and forth between eMachineShop and Inkscape several times, but if you did than that may have caused the problem with the extremely high node count.
