Thanks! I think I've got it now. My main takeaway from this exercise is as follows.
1. The proper use of the "Join Selected Nodes" tool.
2. When in Normal display mode, the extraneous shapes or lines in the image indicate that there is a problem with either nodes which are not joined or open paths.
I previously did not know that the "Join Selected Nodes" tool needed to be used when adding in new path segments. I somehow thought that the "Combine" tool accomplished the same thing. I have been learning Inkscape by "trial and error", and have certainly made my fair share of errors along the way. So this is a great learning experience for me personally.
Here is my result.

I also saved as dxf and opened with Design Edge (as I always do).

This is "par for the course" with Inkscape files as well as others. I'm pretty sure they will cut fine when opened with SheetCam, but there have been instances in the past where some with high node counts have caused problems in SheetCam for some other members. For those without Design Edge, these files from Inkscape can be imported to LightBurn and are automatically linked/joined upon export.
Thanks to Rocrwler for your invaluable help with this one. Very much appreciated!
