@Peechy, thanks for the heads up. I just purchased the file and cut it out in a small scale form as a test, and will put one together soon. Will post pics when finished.

Still in progress, but you get the idea. It is much easier to fit up. Well worth the $6.45 from makecnc.com

I have learned a lot from this thread, not just fire pits, shapes, names of shapes, history etc... but also about copy-writes and patents.
And how to act mature and stand for what you believe in.
Thank you spider.

Re: 3d "soccer ball"...definitely NOT a fire pit
Just curious, how many of you are building these using individual hex and pents vs a "fold it together" design where many of the hexs & pents are cut as one piece.
It looks like a lot of work using the individual shapes.
I'm very close to building my first one and have drew everything up in Coreldraw as a fold together design to give speed of assembly. Got to say I was shocked at how much cut time Sheetcam is estimating with mine. I have to reduce the cut speed to 1100 mm/min to prevent table "shake" and it's looking like nearly one and a half hours cut time for a 750mm diameter pit.
With material cost plus cut time plus assembly time I can now see why some members have said they don't bother with these and can make more dollars with less complicated cuts. Soon to be found out.
Keith.

Re: 3d "soccer ball"...definitely NOT a fire pit
I tried it by folding the pieces ,to much grinding . I prefer make them out of 1/4 or thicker so I cut individual shapes and I can assemble my way faster then bending nd grinding butch deybeefy wrote:Just curious, how many of you are building these using individual hex and pents vs a "fold it together" design where many of the hexs & pents are cut as one piece.

Thanks Deyhard,
that's the bit that has me worried. Feels like gambling in a high stakes poker game at the moment. I hope it turns out to be who dares wins and not who dares turns a sheet of steel into scrap LOL.

Re: 3d "soccer ball"...definitely NOT a fire pit
I've made several by welding the individual pieces together. I've not timed myself but it doesn't take too long. If they're all cut the same size, it's a piece of cake. We never use a new sheet (10g) for these, just when we have some space left over from a job.

Re: 3d "soccer ball"...definitely NOT a fire pit
Thanks Allen,
I'll have to give both methods a shot. If the first one sells for a price I'm happy with I'll try individual hex and pents for the next one.

Re: 3d "soccer ball"...definitely NOT a fire pit
i cut each panel and welded it together. it took a solid day for me to tack it all together. then another day to weld up all the outside edges and grind the welds down. 5 1/4" edges gave me a ball that was 25" tall.

An 8 hour day at $60/hour shop rate (some are higher), x2 days = $960 in labor, without design time, material, cut expenses, finishing, etc. I'm not saying that's a BAD thing...just how the math is working on my end. Guessing...what...$1500 or so rough retail cost for one? Does that sound about right for a 25" unit, those of you who have done/sold them?

I've seen them here for $450....... 10 ga. I think.......I don't think they were welded on the outside....I think they were stitched on the inside. But even so, as cool as they do look, I don't feel there is enough margin to be worthwhile.......haven't tried one yet, I might someday, but I'm not in at $450 retail.

Re: 3d "soccer ball"...definitely NOT a fire pit
Matt70Chevy,
Am I reading that right? A solid day to tack one together?? Holy mackerel! Are you gas welding it? I can't say exactly because I've never gotten to weld one up without interruptions but I tack weld the inside and then when it's all together stitch weld the outside in probably 2-3 hours.

Re: 3d "soccer ball"...definitely NOT a fire pit
i'm wrong....or said it wrong...that was cutting it and tacking it. i spent the next day welding up the outside edges and grinding/blending down the beads. i'm no speed demon but i'm not sure where I could've made up any time. maybe on the fit up and tacking it together i could've saved some time
but i wanted to make sure each panel was dead nuts.

@Matt70Chevy, nice job on your pit. Would you mind sharing just the pedestal file without any artwork on it? I am finding the one I used from earlier posts is just too wide at the base. It looks as if you have figured out the correct angle on yours. Thank you.

Re: 3d "soccer ball"...definitely NOT a fire pit
Lacking in enough brain power to accomplish this on my own, how do I calculate how much to resize the individual panels to come up with a 60" diameter "soccer ball"?
Thanks.
Allen
Thanks.
