Cutting i/4 inch hot dipped galvanized plate

Post by Dirtmotor »

I was digging thru my steel pile for some 1/4 inch plate ,hot dipped galv. 12 inch wide flat iron is all I found .
Never have cut any of it on my table . I am sure the fumes are thick . I do have a water table and a decent exhaust set up . The questions I have is how does it cut and how rough on consumables is it ?

For me galvanized has always cut just as well as mild steel, it will deposit soot on your nozzle and shield but I don't find it is any harder on consumables than mild steel.

Curious how the galv cuts for you. Posts pics of your parts if you can.

Finally got to project I needed to cut galvinized for . It cut just fine , side note I tried spotting holes to be drilled but torch hardened spot too much .

I have had very good luck using Plasma to pock mark steel for drill hole centering with G-code positioning.
I use a little power for the pock marks and then drill with a center drill to start for bigger hole drilling.
These are the center drills I use after the Plasma pock marks

Very clean looking cuts, nicely done. I don't like using the plasma to mark drill holes either, prefer to use pen marker or easyscriber.
