Replacing Powermax 1250 torch
Hi, I have a Powermax 1250 machine and as you know, the consumable's cost is quite expansive, so I would like to ask if it's possible & practical to replace the torch (which is quite heavy and not too convenient to use) to another, not the original, of course that uses consumables at a more reasonable cost - torch. if it can be done, please tell me which type/brand can be used.

Re: Replacing Powermax 1250 torch
Thanx for your reply. I followed the link and the torch seems more "user friendly" than the original one but I guess ( I haven't checked yet) that the cost of consumables will remain high. that was why I asked if there is a way to replace the original torch with an "aftermarket" torch. if I may make a comparison to mig torch, where there are quite a few brands of torches, so one can choose and they all fit, or in this case, if the plasma torch is a "generic" type or Hypertherm has a unique connector/fitting so that only Hypertherm's torches can be used, or if there is an adaptor that enables the use of another torch.SegoMan DeSigns wrote: ↑Sat Apr 09, 2022 1:30 pm koper,

Re: Replacing Powermax 1250 torch
you can try to fit a trafirmet torch (s series, as they are blowback start)
https://www.trafimet.com/images/CATALOG ... SPARES.pdf
I am fairly certain I've seen a post showing one fitted to a hypertherm..... I cannot vouch for how well it worked
the consumables are quite common and available from many places as Chinese knockoffs.
the hypertherm 1250 is an 80A rated machine so I would look for a 80A plus rated torch...... I think that trafirmet make a S45, S65 and S105..... the 105 would therefor be the one to aim for
pdf pages 56 and 28 of the above linked documents are what you are looking for in my opinion.
https://www.google.com/search?q=pd0119+ ... e&ie=UTF-8
now it seems the problem is RANGE..... the trafirmet torches only come with 50A, 70A and 105A rated consumables..... so if you do a lot of low amperages file stuff.... you may meed a second torch as the orifice will be smaller.....
it seems like a lot of pain and agro to me.... I'd sell the machine and invest in something else that better suits your needs and range of materials and thicknesses you cut.
your choice and pain though
it seems that trafirmet also made hypertherm consumables for the 1250 at one point....
you can search for PD0234 plasma // PD0234-10 // PD0234-12 (the number on the end is the orifice size 10 = 1mm, 12 = 1.2mm)
https://www.google.com/search?q=pd0234+ ... s-wiz-serp
or alternatively....
https://a.aliexpress.com/_vCWokW
again... I'd just buy a newer machine from another manufacturer and recover some cash to put towards a newer one and avoid the trial and error with consumables you are willing to pay for.

Thank you, this is the most comprehensive response I ever received. as per the Chinese consumables, I know that they can be bought on Aliexpress, but as far as I know, they are of lower quality than the original ones. if I'm wrong and they are worth buying, according to experience of members of the forum that use them, I'll be glad to hear.

Re: Replacing Powermax 1250 torch
they are of lower quality.
I believe the issue is the hafnium insert .... size or quantity
it seems to be about $1700 per kg so a copy manufacturer will probably try to minimise it's quantity and purity
https://www.google.com/search?q=hafnium ... e&ie=UTF-8
the rest is just machining.... and no one can copy stuff like the Chinese....
you pay for what you get .... pay half price expect to last half as long
the newer machines do have improved consumables and consumable life if they are genuine hypertherm

Re: Replacing Powermax 1250 torch
My personal opinion is that you would do best to stick with OEM Hypertherm consumables. I believe this has been discussed before on several other threads.koper wrote: ↑Sun Apr 10, 2022 7:07 am Thank you, this is the most comprehensive response I ever received. as per the Chinese consumables, I know that they can be bought on Aliexpress, but as far as I know, they are of lower quality than the original ones. if I'm wrong and they are worth buying, according to experience of members of the forum that use them, I'll be glad to hear.

Re: Replacing Powermax 1250 torch
I would also stick with the Hypertherm torch. It could be that your consumables are wearing out prematurely which is very very common when compressed air quality is poor and/or cutting parameters are incorrect. Air quality plays a HUGE role in consumable life and is often disregarded. If you see black or gray swirling stains on your electrode or inside your nozzle that is impurities in the air burning up. This super heats the arc and wears the nozzles out almost instantly.

I think it would be worthwhile for you to call in to our technical support team, you can talk to them about your consumables to troubleshoot if there is a way for you to get longer life.
