Heavy Dross - Help
Newbie here….what do I need to change to reduce the dross on the back of my cut? Using a cut master 52, plasma cam software.

What material are you cutting? How thick is the material? Maybe post some screen shots of your Design Edge Settings for Machine Control, Offset/Convert, and Height Control so we can see what settings you are using. Also post a photo of the edge quality and front side of the part. Does the dross fall off easily if you drop the part on the steel table or floor, or is it really difficult to remove?

That is some thick fluffy dross. I think that if you were to increase your cut speed you could eliminate a lot of that. Be sure your are maintaining the correct cutting height also after you make the speed change. Cut height for your TD should be around .100" Cut another and lets check it out!

I cut 12 ga. using FineCut consumables at about 120 imp, or at about 190 ipm using non-FineCuts. These are book specs for my Hypertherm Powermax 85. You have a different cutter, but perhaps your 88 ipm is a bit slow. In referring to the mechanized cut charts for your machine, the recommend cutting speeds are shown below. Cut speeds of 142 imp for shielded consumables and 170 ipm for non-shielded consumables. I would recommend trying the recommended cutting speed for the particular consumables you are using to help eliminate or reduce your low speed dross.

88ipm seems a little slow and like i said that definitely looks like low speed dross. Don't be afraid to change your speed, you can always go back. Give it a try and I am confident you will achieve improved results.

I could be wrong but 12 gauge is not 0.135 more like 0.104 but other posters are correct, that looks like low speed dross.

Dennis - you are correct. My mistake. I was looking at the screen shots the OP posted of his Plasmacam settings pages. He listed the material thickness as 0.135". So I went with that. I guess it is really unclear from his post if the material he is cutting is 0.135" thick or 12 ga. If it is indeed 12 ga. then he should be cutting even faster than the cut chart shows for the 0.135". So bottom line - he needs to increase his cut speed.
