Entry gate

Post by elkriverfab »

Here is an entry gate I just finished building.

I wanted to take it off the engine hoist before taking photos but this thing is a bear and I am sore from moving it all around so.....It is on the hoist.

I built the gate in two days for a customer who wanted it for his fathers home.

I don't know how I get them.....This guy wanted it built in two days and ready for pick up.

He is the largest commercial contractor in the area and is used to having large jobs slammed out.

I said no problem and it is ready to be picked up, this is why it is still on the hoist.

Just thought I would share.

I am tired.

Thank you very much!

I used a shop outfitters ring roller to roll the top arch.
I think I am going to get the harbor freight ring roller for the larger stuff.

I am going to drive it off an electric motor though.......That arch kicked my but.

The shop outfitters does not want to roll 1-1/2 inch so I had to remove the drive rollers and roll on the pins.
Real slow and very careful so I would not damage it.

The gate weighed so much it took four of us to load it in the customers trailer.

It was a solid 2 days for sure. I must have moved that gate 100 times to get to all the welds.

I did draw plans up yesterday for a rotisserie that wild hold large projects and they can be rotated 360 degrees so I wont have to kill myself.

You know you are getting older after a project like this. Just a few years ago I could move this thing all day and not think about it.

Now.......I feel it.

Thank you for the complement. :D

Hey Shawn
That is some very nice work. Did you design the stile or did the contractor drew something up?

Eagle Mountain.

I designed the gate from the customers ideas.

He told me what he wanted, (arch top) and said design something, so I drew it up for him to look at.

I thought the X design was nice and the bottom horizontals were there to help keep his dog from going through.

I would really like to build one like the aluminum gate someone posted a few weeks ago.
That was a nice gate.

Real solid looking but lighter than steel tubing.
When I saw the aluminum gate posted in the picture section It really got me thinking about building one for myself when I can.

I have always wanted to work with aluminum like that.

I would love to build one for a customer but they never want to pay the higher cost of aluminum.

I guess I am the same Way too....

Hey Shawn
What wall did you go with. As far as the alum gate I would just like to learn how to weld like that. I have always wanted to be able to weld alum and tig. I am just a self taught mig and i just switch from flux this year. Should have done that 14 years ago and I would saved a lot of time cleaning up the slag before painting.

Plasma Joe
Plasmajoe,

There was a lot of welding.
Even with skin protection I still manged to get a nice welders tan

I decided to wear a bandanna rag on my head and now I have the half red forehead and half white forehead thing going on.

I counted over a thousand welds but than I went over them twice just to get a good bite in everything.
So it was over 2,000.

I had to add angle iron behind the hinges just in case the weight decided to peel the hinged off the tubing.
I didn't want to just weld the hinges to the tubing without a backing plate of some sort.

Now I have to build railing inserts for a customers front and back decks.
Looks like I better get over feeling old because it is just going to be another long week.

I am starting to think my neighbors down the road may think I am a crack head when they hear grinders running at 3:00 in the morning.

There not close enough for it to bother them but I am sure they are concerned at this point

Eagle Mtn,

I do a lot of flux core welding too.
Some of these projects I get keeps me welding so much that I have to keep going and getting bottles filled.

I live out a ways and it just ends up being a lot of driving and not working......

So, I end up spending so much time with my wire brush cleaning things up.

I have not done a lot of aluminum welding but sure would like to do a lot more.

I have been stick welding so much lately that when I switch to mig it feels like I am using a glue gun instead of welding.
Sometimes its hard to believe that little wire can put it all together after running a stick all day.

I must say your skylights and window inserts look great!
Really adds a nice look to an otherwise normal opening.

The pieces look very clean and crisp.

Its great to see all the cool stuff being made out there.

I still need to get with you on that material hoist you made.
Sure need to put something together like that.
