MillRight Mega V XL Tri-CAM CNC

Post by bLouChipBlacksmith »

Just posting my CNC build info to see what others are doing with multi-CAM CNC machines. I built a customized MillRight Mega V XL, XYZA Tri-CAM Router/Plasma/Laser CNC, 900x900x100 Open Frame Bed, including land-on-surface cutting if necessary for unlimited work surface area. The CNC is integrated into a box truss frame that can be hoisted off the table for portability, storage, and land-on-surface processing. The Mega V model is a stout design with rack and pinion XY drive, 270 in/oz torque motors, built for milling but also adapted to plasma and laser processes. It's been operational for a little over 2 years now and I frequently build projects with it involving all three CAM processes.

My go to software is LightBurn for 2D CAD and laser CAM, then for all plasma and most milling I export svg into SheetCAM for toolpath, then UGS gcode sender. For 3D I use Aspire, and for large sheetmetal projects with complex bends and part fitting I use [con]Fusion360 for CAD.

PrimeWeld Cut60 for plasma, with Tecmo UPM105 torch using PMX45 consumables, Proma THC SD, and custom THC Z Anti-Dive circuit. Makita router for milling, and Neje E80 Quad Diode Laser. Laser and plasma torch are magnetic mount w breakaway safety interlock.

Controller is grbl 1.1i, 4 axis, on Atmega2560 Arduino driving 48VDC 4A Nema23 motors.

Very cool and a setup I have never seen before. Looks like your having a lot of fun and success with it! Should post pics here though, more will get an opportunity to see them.

very interesting setup, I use a completely different route for conversions on my table, Not that I am right just different. This image covers that. :HaHa :HaHa I undo 4 bolts to switch the router to Plasma torch mounts, swap out the water table for a spoil board. Plasma torch cable and router power and Vac hose handles by a boom.
Have you looked into an Ohmic sensor to replace the floating head switch on your torch, no need for the crab thingy.

Thank you. I'd be interested in seeing your machine pics.
re. ohmic sensor, I have considered it. Now that you mention it, I will make a point to give it a try, good winter project. I have a schematic for the current sense circuit, it should work ok even in higher impedance situations which are very likely to occur. Your right that I'd have to be much less concerned with clamping the metal flat.
