Would changing this to turnbuckle be a mistake?

Post by Sampson Jones »

Recent cut problems have caused me to rethink some things . Pictured is the set up many use on their tables , two Allen head bolts spring loaded ,tensioned by a tension spring . I ve always noticed you can move the motor assembly in and out quite a bit due to the spring Allen head mounting method .
What If I remove the two spring Allen head screws and replace them with short non springed screw and tighten these screws tight , then to pull the motor tight replace the tension spring with a mini turnbuckle that I can tighten ?
Will this be a great idea or a bad idea ?
My thinking is no movement is a good thing , but maybe there is a reason people use the pictured mounted method .
Thanks

I got rid of the spring-loaded allen screws, and just bolted it solid. I left the tension spring in place, just to keep the gears meshed while I tightened the screws. No issues since then....

Are those slots where the Z axis moves up and down?

No, the slot is to adjust the mesh between the rack and pinion gears.

This pic shows my setup with the springs, when I was direct drive:

This pic shows mine without the springs, just locked in place by the screw. (with belt reductions)

The Z axis on my Plasma Cam use to slide up and down in the center slot in the picture which created a lot of slop and bound up. I rebuilt it and added these sealed linear bearings which work great and are crash proof.
