I believe code is no more than 4" between bars, but please check with local jurisdictions.

Most building code require a spacing of less than 4 inches. As a building inspector one told me he used a 4 inch ball and if it did not pass through opening between the pickets, it meet code.

I work for a stair and handrail fabricator and it is true that the 4" rule applies to commercial handrails, but on something like an entrance gate it may not have to be so tight.

My brother has done ornamental ironwork for over 25 years in this area and he says the 4" ball is used here by the inspectors. He swearers its an old style copper toilet ball. lol lol lol

Other considerations:

* Will the gates be powered or manually operated?

* Has your community adopted "New York" standards?

* Don't forget tight spacing at bottom for little dogs if they have one.
