You don't need to use object to path or stroke to path or ungroup text. Just type in your text, place over your target object, select both, and then "Path, Union".

Re: Personalized Christmas Ornament - Add your own name
So...perhaps I'm an idiot ....when I purchased the bundle of files, they supplied me with svg, dxf r12 and r14, png etc...Since myplasm only seems to open dxf files, that's what I've been opening and trying to use in inkscape. I opened the same image in svg format, and it worked just like you said. Then I save as a dxf and it works fine.

Part of your problem may be that you have two different layers. This leads me to believe that you are using the same Inkscape template over and over with remnants from an older file edit still present when you open (import) a new file. Try starting from scratch with a new Inkscape window and working on layer 1.

Was the dxf you provided as purchased, or after editing? When I open it, it has very many disconnected line segments. Perhaps post your purchased svg so I can see what it look like.

Here is what the dxf should look like. I now assume that the designated layers were assigned when the original file was created by the seller or his agent, and appear in the file when opened by the customer.

Re: Personalized Christmas Ornament - Add your own name
I believe the dxf I posted was as purchased. I did take note of the disconnected line segments. The same ornament design was in my purchased files. When I open the dxf version, it also had broken paths and a fairly highnode count so I found a video on fixing that and simplifying the design. Still could not get the font to union until i used the svg of it. I will say when I open another project inkscape does open a whole new window. Perhaps you're on to something with the layers. I'm hoping to get some time tomorrow to experiment with inkscape/myplasm if my 1 year old lets me

I would recommend working with the purchased svg files and not the dxf versions. On the file I showed above, you can also do additional editing to reduce node count for perhaps a smoother and less choppy cut with your table.
