Hey everybody,
I am looking into building a wood stove for this winter.
It does get cold here and our farm house furnace is outdated when it comes to keeping up with the cold fronts
My question is, I want to build a non catalytic stove.
Maybe I am wrong about this but I had one a while back and it seemed to work great. It was clean burning and really put out some heat.
I am trying to figure out the baffle configuration inside the stove.
I understand there should be fresh air brought in from outside, (bottom of stove).
The air should come up the back and into the fire box.
Also an air space under the fire box and up through the front as well.
I also understand there should be a baffle on top too (brick lined).
If there are any experienced stove builders out there, I would appreciate your input on this.
Maybe the non catalytic stove is not the way to go? Should I go catalytic?
It sure would be a lot easier.
I will include a dxf of what I think........it should look like?
I just want to make sure I am building the air wash correctly.
Thanks.

Re: Wood Stove Baffle Question
Hey Shawn.
I looked over your drawing for the stove. As you know allready I build lots of these. You are on the right track, you will have a good fire and exhaust like that.

Re: Wood Stove Baffle Question
I thought about building one last year for my place. Seemed like a good idea until my insurance guy came out. Long story short......if it doesn't have a UL sticker on it. They wouldn't insure me.

Re: Wood Stove Baffle Question
I have never built one from scratch, I have re-built a few and used them my whole life. My only concern is you may have a smoke problem everytime you open the door to add wood. You may want to consider an openable baffle hole directly below the flue pipe, to give the smoke a straight shot while adding wood. IMHO
