Re: Fan Clutch Spanners
OK, I own a auto repair shop and have been a ASE certified Master Tech for over 40 years. I own and use fan clutch wrenches on a regular basis but don't under stand the hook on the end. Can someone help me here? I know I must be missing something. Not blond but I am getting old. LOL

Re: Fan Clutch Spanners
It's for using an air hammer to break the fan nut loose and tighten it without having to hold the fan clutch from rotating. Just put the wrench on in the right orientation and put your air hammer in the hook, hit it with a couple of quick bursts from the air hammer and the fan will come loose. Great tools. Built one for a buddy of mine that works for GM and he loves it. You can also add in your initials when cutting just to guarantee it doesn't find a new home!

Re: Fan Clutch Spanners
I just changed the water pump on my 7.3l Ford and had to borrow one from a student. Reverse engineering his was on my list to do but now I will not have to. Thank you very much. I also like the air hammer hook. His did not have that. These things are a life saver.

Re: Fan Clutch Spanners
What thickness of metal do you use? I was thinking of 10 ga. Thank you

Re: Fan Clutch Spanners
I would go with 1/4" or 3/16" at the very least. I'd be afraid 10 ga might spread apart. Some of those fan clutches can be pretty tight!teachag wrote:What thickness of metal do you use? I was thinking of 10 ga. Thank you

Re: Fan Clutch Spanners
Teachag, I would use tool steel if possible. I cut one out of 1/4 and it spread the first time I used it. Like MetalTorcher said they can be pretty tight. Mine was on a diesel. It worked but I had to use my MAC TOOL one to put it back. Thank goodness I just cut one to try.

Saved and cut just the 2" one. Added a handle to it and it worked like a charm.

Can you post a picture of the air hammer being used with the wrench. I know you explained it above but I just cant picture it. Some times I need to see it being used to understand it.
Thanks Gary

Re: Fan Clutch Spanners
You'll have to use the correct chisel tip but here's how you would use it:ggeh wrote:rockstar metalworks wrote:It's for using an air hammer to break the fan nut loose and tighten it without having to hold the fan clutch from rotating.
