RUST!!!!

Post by Baileigh Inc »

Man I cannot beat this rust. My pieces start rusting immediately after cleaning them. I cant even walk from one side of my garage to the other without my pieces growing surface rust. It is super humid in Wisconsin.

Any tips would be great.

How much room you got in the ceiling? A Big Ass Fan helps. could oil the material. If using acid, are you washing it off with the base solution and then force drying it?

If washing it with acid, if you don't rinse it off and dry real quickly you'll tend to get that surface rust pretty quickly. I just make sure i dry my pieces off extremely well and i get no problems with the surface rust.

My experience, cold rolled cuts better too.

Wow I'm feeling guilty reading this.

Two or three weeks ago I de-rusted a couple of parts for the very first time with hydrochloric acid. I'd heard a lot about flash rusting after doing this so I took a few steps and it seemed to work.

From the acid bath they went straight to a plain water bath, then finished with a garden hose.

Then used compressed air to blow the bulk of the water off, then finally used an electric hot air gun to absolutely ensure any moisture is completely gone, but more important it raises the temp of the metal to well above atmospheric which stops airborne moisture condensing on the plate.

The two peices were sitting bare for half an hour and absolutely no sign of any rust forming.

Good luck,

Keith.

Get yourself a can of Boeshield, it's made by Boeing, I spray it on all my cast iron tables in the shop and anything else I don't want to rust. It works.

Do a search for Boeshield T9 on Amazon...

I use this on my table rails. I cleaned them months ago, and the T9 is still working great.
