cut speed and slag

Post by moosehorn »

I have been cutting some 16 gauge cold rolled steel with my hypertherm 1000 at 150 inches /min
and seem to have more slag on the bottom side of the cut than I think I should.
I'm using a plasmacam 4x4 table, clean dry air, using all hypertherm cut charts for finecut.
I'm wondering should I slow the speed down,or speed up to get less slag?
I'm sure some of you professionals can help me out. thanks in advance moosehorn

More speed. Lower amperage setting.

I cut 16 ga. at 250 ipm, 45 amps using Hypertherm 45xp or 85 with Duramax torch with FineCut consumables.

Like these guys said, speed it up. I like to test by cutting a straight 24" lines and gradually increasing the speed with each line that I cut. Eventually you will go too fast and it will no longer cut through. This will help to find the optimum cut speed for minimal dross for a given material thickness and amperage combination.
