Newbie question again.........
I have an image that I want to edit in Inkscape. I was able to enlarge it....... but it still has the silly little original "box" that the image was sent to me in. How do I get rid of the box?!

Re: Newbie question again.........
Is this an image file or vector file? If the file was sent to you in svg or dxf format, then try opening Inkscape first and then "importing" the file instead of opening it. Sometimes that is just the outside border for the original file. Have you tried selecting and deleting the box? If you are not sure - you are welcome to PM me with the file and I will have a look and let you know how to fix it.

The box is the "document" window or "page size".
You can change the size if you click FILE, Document Properties and change the width and height.
I usually set the size to the size of the material I'm working with.
your 'box' appears to be 20.xx" x 11.xx" (cant read the digits with the glare.)

Re: Newbie question again.........
Mo - I can't see the bottom of his screen, but I am assuming that he has the artwork (horse with lettering) selected and the W and H values are indicating this size. I don't believe that the document window is "selectable", even if you have checked the box for "border" in the Document Properties tab. I normally have my document window set to white and the desk color set to a contrasting color (light gray).
My assumption is that he has both his page color and background color set to the same color (white) and his border color turned on and set to black. In that case, he could simply uncheck the "border" box in the Document Properties tab to make the "box" disappear.
Or as you have suggested - increase the overall size of his page size ("document window"). I normally have mine set to 48" x 48" with no border and a contrasting desk color.

Inkscape "Import" vs. "Open".

Re: Newbie question again.........
Thank you Rokc. That worked. Now for my next question....
I want to put a border around this logo to cut it out in the shape of the border. I want the border to be the shape of one of my daughter's belt buckles. What's the easiest way for me ( who doesn't know what he's doing) to achieve this and give me a chance to learn some more.
Thanks for the help.

Do you want the "border" to be the same shape as your photo - only slightly larger? Or is the shape of the belt buckle different?Mustangranch22 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 8:51 am Thank you Rokc. That worked. Now for my next question....

Re: Newbie question again.........
OK - I'm assuming that the photo you provided is your daughter's belt buckle that you referred to. First - you need to get an accurate trace of the outline of the existing buckle. My example shows me tracing your photo, but it would be better if you would place your buckle on a piece of white paper and trace around it with a black fine tip sharpie marker.
Then you can use a flat bed scanner to scan your trace into your computer and save in digital format. Some scanners will save directly to svg format, while others will save as jpeg. If your scan is in svg format, then you can import that svg directly into Inkscape and clean it up and then use the Outset tool to offset it to the larger size you require. If your result is in jpeg format, then import to Inkscape and autotrace. Then use the Outset tool on the autotrace result to offset to your desired size.
There are many different methods to digitize a shape like your belt buckle. I have shown several of them here.
Let us know if you have any questions about the process.

Re: Newbie question again.........
Ok perfect. I don't have a scanner. I think the jpeg method is what I will try. I want the shape of this belt buckles to be the border around her business logo that I posted in the beginning of this thread. It will need to be large enough for that. I think the logo I stretched out to 36" wide give or take and height was 19" or so. I'll try this tomorrow when I'm back home. Thank you!

I'm not sure what the relationship is between your the image you posted originally and the "belt buckle" you show in your latest question. Do you mean that you want to create a border around the horse and text? You say you stretched this logo out to 36" wide. How will that work as a belt buckle? Or is this to hang on the wall for display?

Re: Newbie question again.........
I guess I didn't explain it well. There is no relationship between the two other then they are both my daughters. I made the logo bigger so we can cut it out in a larger size. We want to cut a border cut around it, that is the shape of the belt buckle that is hers. Thats the only connection of the two. I already expanded or enlarged the size of the Horse head logo and words. But them just being on a square piece of steel doesn't look esthetically pleasing. So if I can get her logo inside a border that is shaped just like her buckle it will be neat.

Mustangranch22 - here are several examples showing the Inkscape manual trace process using the Bezier draw tool.
This is the method I used to trace the photo of your belt buckle shown in my previous post.
