corner lifting clamps??

Post by jspfeffer »

I swear I have seen a post ... just not sure if it was this site.. or some other random site.. can't seem to find it.. Just need a sanity check..

I am often in need of lifting steel plate.. either 4'x4' or 8'x4' from about 1/2" to 1"

I could have sworn I saw a solution of taking some plate say 1/2" by 2" wide and welding them say 1 1/4" above each other and slide the contraption over the corner of sheets, and have a lifting eye on them.. to attach chains and lift with cherry picker. and lift horizontally

This captures the corners and short chains between them don't allow the brackets to slide off while lifting.. Any thoughts?

Thanks

I think you are correct, you may try changing the search name, we all don't call things the same.
I know there was a cam type clamp for lifting posted maybe 4 years back
here it is

HI thanks for the reply... not quite what I was talking about... it really wasn't a clamp in the sense that as you pick it up it exerts more force... it literally just slipped over the corner of material... and you used 4 of them.. one for each corner...with a chain or cable to keep them from sliding off..

Thanks for the links.. and the time.. Have a good one

Those look like they would do the job. The file would be fine as-is for anything less that 1/4" thickness. For lifting 1/4" plate, I would increase the width of the slot to maybe 5/16". For lifting thicker plates - size up the clamp material thickness, slot width, and overall size accordingly.

I modified the original file with corner fillets and a smoother circle for the hole.

I would imagine the oval hole is to better allow the chain hook to fit. It might not fit into the round hole.

I was itching to cut something so I put my spin on it. Using a smaller hole to receive a clevis pin allowed me to shrink the whole profile. Offset the hole to allow for even tighter nesting. Additional lifting tackle seems a bit excessive, but it'll be nice to be able to use them with straps if I want. Makes it easy to adjust chain length with this setup also.

This was my first time cutting 1/4" so it was an opportunity to start tuning my table for this thickness. Fun afternoon. Hoping to grab shackles and chain this weekend so I can put them to work.

BrayD - those turned out great, and I like that nice Fusion 360 solid model you put together. Nice work!

I opt'd for Fusion on this one so I could pull a shackle into an assembly and confirm I had clearance for install. I'm sure others are aware, but it's worth noting that mcmaster.com has 3D models for much of their product offering.

I got everything together and it works as expected. The whole setup is a bit fussy, but I can just leave it on the hoist and it should be more efficient next time. 100% better than trying to move things manually like I was doing before.

I'll look forward to seeing some pictures of your new clamps in action. Yes - that is a pretty handy feature of Fusion 360 that allows for inserting McMaster-Carr components.

BrayD - Very nice! It looks like you've got plenty of room to maneuver around in your shop with full sheets of material. For me - it's a good thing that I normally work with smaller pieces of material. My table is 4x4 and I generally have the 4x8 sheets cut in half by the local supplier. The thickest 4x4 piece I ever load onto my table (by hand) is 11 ga. steel. For thicker materials (1/4" and thicker) have have it cut down to more manageable sizes before I put it onto my table.

Also - the area around my table is pretty tight - so I would need to move a few larger pieces of equipment before I could get my cherry picker anywhere close to the table to load a 1/2 sheet of thicker material.

Plenty of space for now, but I need to get material storage and such sorted pretty soon. It fills up quick when I bring in projects (tractors, vehicles, boats, etc). I'm between jobs right now so I'm having fun with the table. The shop is in a terrible state of disarray at the moment. Multiple stacks of sheet steel consumes floor space in a hurry.
