Pneumatic gasket scraper for dross removal?

Post by jlasater »

Might want to throttle it back a bit (I don't know what the stroke length is on these things), but would one of these work good for dross removal? Knocking the sharp points off at the edges would probably help keep it from scratching the metal badly.

Something like one of these may be a better choice.

I’ve tried a needle scaler before. It didn’t seem to work well for me surprisingly.

Hopefully someone else has better results.

Needle scaler never worked out well for me either. I use the muriatic acid bath technique for most of my stuff. Once I tried that I was sold on it.

I have a needle scaler for stick welding. It works great for welding, but is like using a sledgehammer for dross clean up on sheetmetal/thin plate.

I tried the needle scaler, the multitool with various blades, flap disks, and knotted wire cups. The best method I've found is knotted wire cup and then 60 or 80 grit paper on a DA.
The other tools marked up the material and as you mentioned, does not work well on thin stuff.
I cut everything from 22ga - 3/4" and use the same cup and DA for all with good results.

Same here - I use a knotted wire cup, flap discs, and d/a with 80 grit. I don't personally own either a pneumatic gasket scraper or needle scaler.
