so I created a simple file in Inkscape to practice creating layers.
Kind of baffled I created two simple parts and two layers named them 1 scribe 2 plasma. saved the file as SVG imported the file to sheet cam.
When I opened the file in Sheet cam in came in as one layer one part. I never union or grouped the parts so Im not sure why its showing in one layer.
see attached.

Ok figured it out When you open the file in Sheet cam you need to uncheck the box that says use color for layer name!
Thanks

I think its great that there are people here willing to collaborate and share there knowledge.
I went from being totally frustrated to really learning the process and programs. Thank you all !

Re: Creating a cut file from Inkscape to sheetcam
So I moved the layer discussion to a new topic because we have coved several different operations in this one post.
I'm still playing with naming layers and working with layers.

Re: Creating a cut file from Inkscape to sheetcam
I only showed the color option from Inkscape for a demonstration, I make all my layer changes in SheetCam using the contour tool. Attached is a cut job I did 2 months ago, which had 3 layer operations on some parts. This included a dimple layer for center punching location for drilling later. SheetCam will do the inside operations first then move to the outside last. With the LinuxCNC software the dimple are very short and I don't need to change the plasma amps. The job also shows the plan on a 8" wide steel plate, I did not want to buy a full sheet for the parts. SheetCam allows selecting a work envelope for part nesting in the plan.

Re: Creating a cut file from Inkscape to sheetcam
I Tried creating the layers the way you showed . But when I select the contour it doesn't give me the option to create the layer.
This what I get when you use the contour tool and click on the piece.

Re: Creating a cut file from Inkscape to sheetcam
Disregard my last post. I had nesting selected instead of the contour tool. Lol
Thanks
