That piece gets bent on the lines and slides in the wood shute 45 to allow an air gap and prevent fuel from blocking flow path. Not sure what an OP is but if that person is talking about me I'm active on here daily

Also what size is the cut on the upright 4 x 4 tube to allow the 45 to join in

If I am understanding correctly you are asking about the tube cut..
If you are using a 4x4 tube, your cut would also be 4" in order to achieve a 45 deg. angle on a 4" tube.
A 6x6 tube would be a 6" cut etc..
You can use a tri-square to verify the notch.
If you want a different tube takeoff angle, this will not work and will need to either lay out or trigged..

thank you for the share do you have and thoughts on venting the grate supports in case you use a large pan. i thought about raising the grate but like the flush fit of the cooking surface
