Design questions

Post by bscheu »

Hi, I am trying to help a friend do a sign for their office. I have attached the logo that I was given and my progress so far. It took me a while to find the correct fonts, but I think they are close enough. I just can't seem to get the car to come out correctly. I think this is the best version of the picture they have. Should I have them get in contact with the original designer to see if there is a better picture or is there a better program that I can use to convert the car to something able to be cut?

Thanks in advance
Bryan

Thank you. I’ll see if they are interested in this. I’m not making any money on this since I was just helping out a friend so I don’t want to spend my own money.

If they are keen on it and its a business can they not just write it off against their tax as an expense?

cost of doing business...

It would be helpful if we could get the original artwork at much higher resolution (before you modified and added the lettering). This would make it easier for auto-tracing and/or manual tracing and editing.

I would expect the small amount of money they would have to pay for a file conversion is no problem at all.

They are already getting a friend to do a business sign for free. The file conversion price is chicken feed.

The car conversion appears to be just an auto trace from an existing image. That will be the reason you can't seem to get it to come out correctly. Very often auto traces give out garbage, and you either have to modify the auto trace or very often manually draw from scratch or manually trace.

Have you looked at any tutorials on Youtube, Google, etc on learning to draw/modify lines and nodes, and manual tracing.

Man your attempt at it looks pretty darn good, text is super clean. For sure a larger resolution image of the logo would help a ton with the car conversion nut it's pretty close. Cstroke has done a nice job of connecting all the elements together for you, just the car needs some more time put into it and i think the asphalt or whatever that is may need to be eliminated.

I will look into youtube videos so that I can learn more myself. I've been mostly a parts drawer or very basic picture/ signs for 14 years. Haven't played much with more complicated pieces like this car.

Thank you. I found fonts that were close on the internet and imported them into my computer so that I wouldn't have to clean up their font during the conversion. I only kept the asphalt because we are hoping to cut it out separately and offset it as more of a 3D design. Maybe I'm biting off more than I can chew :HaHa

What car is it?
Maybe do a search for that style car.
Ex. Porshe 911 angled clip art and see what pops up.. clip art or stencils are easy to clean up.
This was a 30 second search as an example...

I'm fairly certain after googling it may be a Nissan 370z or something very similar

I think we came up with something that is close enough for us to be satisfied with. Thank you everyone for your help, Final draft attached. Planning to layer the 2 pieces together.

Very nice work! You're almost there.
I found 4 intersections/crossovers as shown below.

Thank you David. I don't know if my program has this option to see that. I'm using VCarve. I should have seen the big one, but the 2 small ones I would have missed. Thanks again.

You are welcome! Happy to help.

In Vectric VCarve Pro or Aspire, you can use the vector validation tool to find crossovers. You can then use either the trim tool or node editing to repair the drawing path. Here is an example with your file.
Vector Validator 1.jpg
Vector Validator 2.jpg

Note that 4 intersections were found.
Vector Validator 3.jpg

You can zoom in on the first one (on the left) to see the problem. The node editing tool works well to repair this.
Vector Validator 4.jpg

Zoom in on the second one and you can see the problem. The trim tool works well to simply trim away these unwanted paths.
Vector Validator 5.jpg

The trim tool also works well to trim away the unwanted portions of the bottom of the "A".
Vector Validator 6.jpg
Vector Validator 7.jpg
When you have finished editing use the Join tool to convert any open paths to closed paths.
Vector Validator 8 - Join vectors.jpg
The resulting dxf file will be the same as the one I edited with Design Edge.
