The impossible sphere

Post by stigsolbjerg »

Hi i have made a try on a sphere but there i somthing wrong. It is 400 mm diameter, so i took half diameter about 628 mm and made a 10 sided hexagon in side it gave somthing like 120 mm. so i made an orangepeel 120 wide and a curve 628. But it aint wright when i weld i togheter. I cant fit all 10 pieces in. Can anyone help me?
Sorry if i misspelled a lot.

I have a file i drew up for a 3d soccer ball that would make a cool fire pit if youre interested. It looks pretty easy to assemble. There are only two shapes in a soccer ball..hexagons and pentagons. knowing that , I drew 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons with equal length sides. Now you have all the sides. With a soccer ball to look at I think assembly would be relatively simple.

Making a sphere is beyond my knowledge of being a high-school graduate with a C- average. I guess I don't understand what a ten sided hexagon is. I also dont know how to work in mm's. I tried a circle of a 400mm diameter and divided by 10 and ended up with 36 degree pie cuts, and the outer curved edge of each of the ten pieces would be 123.61mm in length. Are you then going to use a slip-roll or something to get get the desired sphere? Like I said I'm limited in math and don't know if and how this all changes when turning a flat circle into a sphere. But I know there are some really sharp people on this forum that do.

Hi did som more drawing today, and hope i found the problem, when u use the 123,61 mm and then the lenght of the half cirkel. Stick those toghter at the middel and then use the curve tool to create the sides =wrong. Today i made three more middel lenghts and then the curve is slightli smaller at the ends. So now im gonna cut it out of paper and then beltsand the pieces to fit.

Here's what I came up with from an online ball pattern generator after cleaning up the DXF it produced. This is saved in inches so you may have to scale accordingly.

Try this to make a sphere. http://www.gma.org/surfing/imaging/globe.html
I used this method in my Cad to make the domes for this project.
