Re: Finaly dialed in and cutting
Just so people have an idea... here are my setting I did this on
Cutmaster 51
Material 7Gauge( 3/16)
peirce .188
cut .06
pierce dellay 1.2
Feed for cut 52IPM
Feed from Pierce to Cut 65
Feed Holes 30IPM
The dross was minimul.. and could be knocked off with your finger nail. I still through it in
a Muratic bath just to give an even coloring.

Re: Finaly dialed in and cutting
Do you record all of your settings when you get them tuned in?
I have only cut 18 guage and I am really fearing new settings for other gauges as it seems to have taken me forever to get it right?
Any you share are greatly appreciated.

rock4Xfab,
That is a nice cut.
I like how you got very thin in that one area but yet it is clean and all there (not melted).
Nice.

Re: Finaly dialed in and cutting
so quick question does muratic acid take the dross off as well? just curious. If it does that would be an extreme time saver

I was extremely sceptical about removing dross with muratic acid. But I dug around and found that jug to give it a try.fitzy wrote:so quick question does muratic acid take the dross off as well? just curious. If it does that would be an extreme time saver
It works! There were some larger blobs that did remain, but the majority of it flakes off with a finernail (or less).
My machine was tuned in very well and there wasn't much to remove, but there WAS enough that I WOULD HAVE had to take a wire cup to it.
Time saver? Not really. I let my pieces soak in it overnight.

Here is a good way to get rid of dross. Built the drum to fit a barrel tumbler. Works fast, it does need about 100lbs of parts to work good. Saved me a whole bunch of time this week.

That's an awesome tumbler! I use an old cement mixer someone gave me. I cut out all the paddles and put in some 2X2 angle instead. Tumblers are awesome. They remove all the dross, that friggen brown dust, and leaves a nice finish on it. Tumblers are awesome.

YES, it is noisy. I have only been around one other machine that is noisier, it was a flux crusher for reclaiming submerged arc flux.
I have a spray in bed liner that i will put on/in this weekend. It is supposed to go on up to 1/4' thick. I will do both inside and outside. I have talked to guys who have put rubber belting inside to deaden it some. I hope this works!
I got it off of ebay as a morse barrel tumbler for mixing 55 and 35 gallon liquids. I built the octo-drum in the tombola style out of 3/8" on the ends and 1/2" on the flat centers. It is 28' long by 24" at the flats in diameter.
It turns at a 13rpm, which I thought would be slow but it is just right.

Hey Scratch, check out my tumbler now.
I should cut a sign for it that says:
"step right up, a pound a ticket or six for a fiver"

Re: Finaly dialed in and cutting
Yes I record all my cut conditions for every gauge.. I will spend a Saturday afternoon. just making 4" cut lines in different materials taking note of feeds and heights.. I only make a change to one at a time, until I see what I want. Then right it down in the Bible I have next to the machine. Next time I run it. I just program it into the post. I Also do not use my THC on anything thicker then 16 gauge. I get all my start conditions from the Thermal dyanamics literature for my machine cutmaster 51, I then start to adjust and tweek.automate wrote:Do you record all of your settings when you get them tuned in?

What you see in the picture is a pc's of 3/16 right out of the Muratic acid... just washed off and was in full strength for about 10 min.. I have never gotten a realy large amount off Dross on any of my parts and could probably just send them out the way they are but I am a tad anal..

Re: Finaly dialed in and cutting
It is 1/2" AR500. The parts have low speed dross which falls off really easy. I had to be very careful to get that picture. These particular parts need to be pretty square edged so I lower the speed to compensate. They must be within .030" to be in spec. Slow gets a nice 1.5 degree taper or less. I use hypertherms 1000 (60amp) parts to get the edge.
