Post by HammerDownJustin »

Just curious how many people built there own z axis? I'm thinking about building one for the cnc router table Im fixing to do. Mine on my homebuilt table was a kit from droid cnc or whatever his name was out of Oklahoma years ago.. Thank you just wanting some fresh ideas.

Are the screw drives very hard to figure out the steps when setting motors up? Fixing to start a wood router table next for the wood shop. My current z on my plasma table is rack and pinon.

I just set mine up on Sunday. My z is direct coupled (no belt reduction) If you know the screw pitch, it's pretty easy. 0.200" pitch is 5 turns per inch, 0.100" pitch is 10 turns per inch. Some screws are rated in threads per inch and number of starts. A 10 thread per inch, 2-start screw is the same as a 5 turn per inch screw. A 10 thread per inch, 1-start screw is the same as a 10 turn per inch screw.

Number of threads per inch divided but the number of starts = number of turns per inch.

Pitch = 1" / number of turns per inch.

Number of steps for one rev of stepper - 200
10x micro stepping = 200 revs X 10 =2000 steps per rev
0.200" pitch screw is 5 turns per inch X 2000 steps per rev (turn) = 10,000 steps per inch

I used exactly 10,000 steps when I set mine up and I was within 0.0005" (yes,a half thousandth)

I would say they are easier to set up than rack and pinion.

Setting up the Z for a lead screw is easy just use Mach's "Steps per" cal under settings page. quick and easy no math involved.
I used rack Z on my first table but changes as the torch would drop when power was removed.

Somewhere in one of CandCNC manuals you can find the equation for calculating how to change the number of steps based over a distance to fine tune your table ;)
