3D puzzle-Mosquito
I want to take this puzzle and scale it larger but I don't want the slot size to change. I need to have the slot size fit 16 gauge. How to I resize the slots for that size and scale up the file without changing them?

Re: Help with 3D puzzle
The only way I know is doing it the hard way, one slot at a time. Scale it up and then go back to each slot and draw a line down the middle of the slot, put lines parallel to that line on each side 1/2 the thickness of the slot that you need,, join the new lines at the three corners and delete the old lines. I know this sounds hard but after the first few it gets easier I have had to do this on files where the slots were wrong to start with. If someone has an easier way PLEASE post it as I have several 3D puzzles I want to do.Flatline16 wrote:I want to take this puzzle and scale it larger but I don't want the slot size to change. I was hoping there is a faster way. I need it scaled to fit 16 gauge if anybody wants to give it a whirl.

I do the same thing Larry83301 does.
I don't have time right now but whoever does this for you would need the file attached.

Re: Help with 3D puzzle
I guess I'd have to see the file to be sure, but can you copy the original slot and put it off to the side, scale the entire file to the size you need, then copy and paste the original slot to a "common point" on the new slot?
For example, I'm picturing a rectangle slot. Doesn't really matter what size it is. Now go ahead and get ONE slot fixed/changed/resized, BUT DO NOT DELETE THE BIGGER(SCALED) SLOT. You should basically have a rectangle inside another rectangle (most likely centered).
From here, select your ORIGINAL SLOT ONLY and leave the bigger slot deselected.
Now, use your copy command and don't just click anywhere on screen to copy...click (snap) on the top left corner of the BIGGER SLOT.
After you click on the upper left corner of the bigger slot, now drag your original copy to another bigger slot and again click (snap) on the upper left corner.
You should be able to continue copy and pasting the original slot to ALL bigger slots by this common snapping point. This could be any of the four corners OR if the slot has a radius on the ends, you could snap to the center of the radius. Mid points could also be used.
The main point is once you get one slot where you want it, instead of deleting all of the old ones, use them to your advantage. The majority of CAD work should be copy and pasted whenever possible. It will cut your drawing time in half.
I hope this makes sense. Depending on number of slots, this shouldn't be more than a 5 min job in CAD. If you post the file I'd be glad to look at it.

Id like it to be around 6 inches long slotted for 16 gauge.

Re: Help with 3D puzzle-Mosquito
I sized mine up, but ended up going to the next thickness of metal so I didn't have to resize all the slots, just scaled it up until the slots were .25 and it mad a pretty big tarantula, I also did a ant and a fly that way, looked cool. thanks KH

Go ahead and scale all the parts to however big you need them and I can do the slots for you. Being 3 dimensional, I'd have to build one to know how big the final product will be.

I scaled it up so the "backbone" is five inches.

Re: Help with 3D puzzle
I figured out a faster way to do the slots. I'll see if I can explain how to do it this way and you can see if you think it's faster and you can use it.tnbndr wrote:I do the same thing Larry83301 does.

Select the slot you need to resize (marked in red) next you select the midpoint of the bottom of the slot as the point to scale about, then the scale you need to change it by, I use the new width divided by the old width. Then it's on to the next slot. angle does not make any difference it just scales the slot whatever way it goes. When ALL the slots are done just go back and trim the open end of the slot to your part. And you are done!
Hope this helps someone, if you can understand what I did!
Larry

Re: Help with 3D puzzle
What version of Corel? I cant select just the slot in X6. I have tried ungrouping, control S, Alt S, explode. It only selects the entire component (ie leg).

Re: 3D puzzle-Mosquito
If the overall size change is not too great, another option is alter the kerf width in your CAM software.
I do this all the time to adjust slot widths, so that they come out just right.
Of course if you want it ten times bigger this will likely not work.

The change will be too big and the slots will be loose. I need the slots physically scaled.Greolt wrote:If the overall size change is not too great, another option is alter the kerf width in your CAM software.

Re: 3D puzzle-Mosquito
If the individual components are 1mm larger all round, won't make any difference to most models.
But that means the slots are 2mm tighter, and that may make all the difference.

Re: 3D puzzle-Mosquito
what i do to cheat is change the size of my kerf width if the slots are too tight i'll change the setting in sheet cam from .30 to .22 or .2 and cut a small part and if it fits great if not i'll change it some more no resizing at all makes your part a hare bigger or smaller who cares this way you can scale to any size
