Flighting

Post by cstroke »

Not sure where to look, did a search on flighting but nothing popped up. I thought I read a thread where someone was talking about flighting but I cant find it now.
Anyone have a source of how to make simple flighting? I need to make a drum with flighting on the inside and am not sure how to draw it.
Flighting will fit inside a 36" drum that will measure 35 3/4" and be 5" tall 1/8" thick stainless It's traveling 128" 8 1/2 wraps in that distance.

Flighting is rolled to make the inner dimension smaller than the outer dimension. I don't think there is any way to cut flighting unless you cut donuts and split them, stretch them and weld the ends together.
But I might be wrong.

Is this what you are looking for? This looks like something used on augers, or maybe inside a drum to be used for tumbling parts.

Yup. That's flighting. But he's asking how to make it. He already seems to know what it is by his detailed description of what he is looking to make.

This video might be helpful in understanding how to make it. For this scenario, it would need to be made from multiple pieces and joined together. But I don't see that as being a problem for a "do-it-yourself" type application as described in the original post.

Yes I'm creating flighting for the inside of a "drum".
I got help from someone who can draw it in autocad 360 but the problem is getting it flattened out. It's not straight forward and there are work arounds from what I've read. The guy helping me couldn't flatten it but was able to draw it.
I might have to go old fashioned on it.

I would be interested to see what you have with your autocad drawing. Maybe you could post a screen shot. If it is in Fusion 360, perhaps you could post the file so I can take a look.
Thanks,

You could upload your step file ( or Fusion 360 file) to Google Drive, and then share the link for others to open. Here is an example where I saved a Fusion 360 file to my computer and then uploaded to Google Drive. You can click on the link below to download.

You could also convert your step file to stl format using this free online file converter, then upload your stl file to Google Drive and share download link.

https://anyconv.com/stp-converter/
convert step to stl.jpg
Here it the download link from Google Drive.

Here I opened the converted stl file with Solid Works.

You could also open/import the stl file with Fusion 360.

Yes - it works. I don't see any way to cut that whole thing from flat sheet metal as a single part. It is like a coil spring - I think you will need to cut the individual coils and fasten them together.

Yes. As I stated above, you can make flighting by cutting donuts the correct diameter and stretching them and welding the ends together.

Yes I knew the ring would need to be cut stretched out in the direction of travel and then the 5" flats welded together.
Was just trying to figure out how to make the short section bottom drawing you posted as a flat pattern.
I don't think it's a 38.09x 28.09 circle with sliced it would be more stretched out than that wouldnt it?
Maybe I'm overthinking this

It this the "short section bottom drawing" you are asking about?

I would cut a paper or cardboard pattern and fit it to the inside of your drum. When you bend it, I think it will tend to come in on the sides - but when you test your pattern it will tell you how much you need to add. Then modify your pattern until it fits right when you bend it and fit it inside the drum. Then you can create a cad drawing of your pattern. For me, I would use either my digitizing board or scanything auto tracer to convert the pattern to dxf. You could send me your finished pattern (paper or cardboard) and I will digitize it for you. I will send pm.

Yes, I figured I'd end up doing it the old fashioned way LOL...
It's not a problem drawing it in 2d, once I have the cardboard cut out. I know there has to be a way to model it in 3d and make a flat pattern.
It's just one of those perplexing ones...
I'm fairly proficient with drawing so it's not that big of a deal.
I appreciate everyones help here though.
Thanks

Chris - I am not aware of a way to convert a spring coil, which is effectively what this is, to a flat pattern in Fusion 360. If you find out how to do it, I would be very interested to learn your method.
Thanks,

Triangulation. The radius will lay out larger than the pipe and as it stretches to the correct rise. Once the rise run, and ultimately the radius are established, yes they are just flat donut discs with a splice cut through. on heavy gauge augers we used to tac weld one end down and stretch the other end to the required rise after the pattern was established. .But instead of welding a pipe to the smaller radius like a typical auger, the radius will attach to the larger radius of a drum.
If you need a copy of a layout method I can see if I can find it in the archives and take a picture tomorrow or when I can.. I haven't done one in prolly a decade, but never the had need for attaching to the outside just an auger application. Should be the same layout development though..

What I like about the second one is that it explains how to figure pitch percentage as requested in either one of the calculators..
Yes I agree the first one doesn't seem as janky.. train track flighting , Who would have thunk it.. lol!!!
