Texturing steel before painting?
I am looking for a texured effect to hide scratches and dings in some 4.5 inch letters I'm cutting out. I like rustoliums "hammer" paint but it does not come in the color I need. is there something out there i can create this effect with then paint over it???
Thanks!!!

Re: Texturing steel before painting?
I have seen other pieces done like this but I personally have not tried it yet (but going to) is to spray gravel guard or stone protector. Its the stuff people spray around the bottom of vehicles to help protect paint from stone chips. Check with automotive suppliers and they can probably tell you what can be used and painted over.

Truck bed liner works great too.

Thanks for the ideas but those both sound like they are pretty heavy on the texture. Im looking for more like the "hammer" paint type look. Not a heavy texture but just enough to hide the minor flaws.

Why not use a hammered paint and then paint over it with the color you want?

Re: Texturing steel before painting?
That is what I'm going to do if there isnt another good suggestion. I did it once before and it took a lot of paint to cover it up. Just shopping for other ideas.

try Gravitex, I,ve used it before and it works nicely. It sprays smoother than bedliners to give the finish you described and can be painted over with most paints. http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/u-pol-g ... 15137.aspx

what about going the other rout and fixing the dings. when i do truck bumpers i end up with deep grinder gouges, rust pits, and the like there and there. i went to napa and got some "icing". its basicaly thin bondo. i know i know bondo is a dirty word. for filling small stuff it works geat. drys fast. super smooth finish.

Use stone paint from lowes/home depot ect.
Works great, not as thick as truck bed liner
After its dries paint it whatever color

I buy FUSION rattle cans from walmart. I think they have several colors. I usually go with a black. Most of my items are painted dark so if i miss a spot its not noticeable.wishiwastorching wrote:That is what I'm going to do if there isnt another good suggestion.
