60" Tall metal "Z" letter price check

Post by Nacs Fab »

I have a job request to cut a 60" tall by 58" wide letter "Z" from a customer supplied dxf file. They want it to have fully welded and finished seams with a 2" reveal to make it have a 3D look. I am invisioning a flat 14 gauge main body with 2" wide 20 gauge steel formed to fit the edges of the letter and fully welded (carefully and slowly) and then finish ground. They want 6" long 1/4" dowel "studs" and 3" long spacers (10 total of each). This will then be fully primered and painted with a custom color. The plan is for the owner to install LED Lighting inside the cavity of the letter in the back and it will space off the brickwork roughly 1". Attached is a DXF.

You could have a real warpage problem welding something like that.

Could you cut it with the reveal attached to the straight areas and just bend those areas instead of welding? Then you would only have to weld the curves and corners. Would help with warpage and I would think cut the assembly time by quite a bit.

Good idea, but would need a box and pan brake or magnetic brake.
I could be done welded but I would go heavier , 10 or 12 gauge body with 14 or 16 gauge wrap,to avoid warping and weld randomly and let cool before next weld. Time consuming. You are going to have to supply some kind of template with the dowel hole placement for a drilling guide.
My guesstimate would be $750 - $1000.

Build it out of aluminum. Won't rust and is easier to weld without warpage. I would go 10ga.
