inches cut calculator

Post by racn3636 »

Ok I have been searching everywhere for a way to actually figure out how many inches of cutting there are on my designs to properly put a price on it. I know some of the more expensive nesting software does this for you ex: pro nest, but are there any cheaper alternatives out there?

Not sure what you call cheaper, but SheetCam has a report that shows inches of cut and pierce count.

That's a tough one for sure!! I use Sigma Nesting, I get exact inches of cut, number of pierces and all kinds of good info. The only "cheap" way I can think of would take a lil work but be very accurate. If you are using a CAD based program, poly line everything. Click on each poly line and hit your Properties button. It will give you the exact cut inches associated with that poly line. Jot it down on a spread sheet and keep on doin it till you got em all, then add em up. Like I said, it would be extremely accurate but depending on the complexity of the dwg could be time consuming, but sure would beat just guessing......

Sheetcam does reports with # of pierces and inches of cut. Also does cut times, but those are generally way off. What drawing program do you use? There's an add-on, called eCut which I use with CorelDraw. It's quite handy, and can calculate lengths of curves, etc.

Thanks for the reply. I checked out Sheet Cam and they actually have a free version that works perfect to just bring in a dxf and apply a tool path then go to the report and get the inches cut info.
Thank You Sir

I use Torchmate Cad. Do the inches of cut generally seem accurate on Sheet Cam?

Yes. Inches of cut and #of pierces are dead on.

Cut time estimates are apparently accurate for the router folks, but all the acceleration variances for plasma render it near worthless for us.

LinuxCNC's plasmac configuration counts pierces, distance travelled, cut time and a few other things on a separate tab.

I use Fusion 360.

I can run a simulation before I post the Gcode.

It tells you exactly how many inches or meters and how long it takes to make a cut. It's dead on.

Same for Design Edge. It tells how many cut paths, total cut length, time to cut, etc.
