Mill Scale Removal

Post by Tonywish »

I have a rather large piece of steel that is a sign and I was wondering if some one has a way to get the mill scale off easily. I generally put my steel after cutting into a bath of muratic acid but this is way too big (4' x 16').

put the acid mix in a squirt bottle and spray it onto the steel. As it dries, spray more on. Not quite as effective as soaking the steel, but It breaks up the mill scale pretty well. Or make a bath out of thick plastic sheeting that comes on the rolls; making raised sides out of 2x4's under the plastic (I did this for a 4x8 sheet). Lay the steel in, poor a couple inches of acid mix over it and when you're done can poor the acid back into whatever container you use. I've used both methods with pretty good results. Or get it media blasted.
