flame coloring

Post by billphillips »

I am thinking of trying to do some flame heating of some pieces to add color

What is the best to do it with, oxy acetylene with rosebud of just a normal cutting tip
what type of flame oxidizing or carburizing is better.
What temperatures cause the better colors

thanks bill in red deer

Hey there. I do my heat colouring with a propane torch. It's cheaper than acetylene. And cooler to you can see the changes of heat from straw to bluish more gradually.
You can google a heat color metal chart which will give you the range if colours but I like to just do it by feel and the eye. But don't forget to clear lacquer when cooled.

Thanks larry, used the propane on one yesterday, a much better improvement over my first attempt with oxy acetylene

Now all I need is to practice more
