Brushed Metal Finish

Post by cfmetalworks »

I have a customer request on a furniture piece to give it a brushed steel finish. I am having difficulties trying to find the right pads to use. I have been working on test pieces with a belt sander 100-120 grit, orbital sander 60-100 grit and a flapper disc at 80 grit. The sanders do not take off near enough for the finish they want and the flapper wheel is to inconstant and digs in to much. I've been looking on you tube and the internet I have had no luck finding good info. Does anyone happen to know how to get this finish?

Down below is a sample of what they would like the finish to look like.

Scotchbrite pads will most likely be your method.
The coarsest one on steel with long strokes.

I just ordered the contour drum sander from eastwood. I hope it works like I want it to.
I was planning on doing the finish before I weld everything together and touch up here and there if I have to.

Thank yall for the reply!

I use the Contour SCT from Eastwood with the Finishing Drum to get a brushed steel finish. I have all the drums offered but use the finishing drum to get the brushed steel look. I'm sure you will love it.

littleblue- I'm glad to hear you like it. I was kinda worried making the plunge buying the tool. I ordered the 80 grit drums. Do you think those will do it? It is suppose to be delivered this Friday. What is the drum life like on metal that is pretty clean with just light water rust stains? I've also heard other people say you can buy drums from amazon and they fit at half price. Any luck with that?

Thank you!

I have only used the drums from Eastwood. The finishing drums give the best results for me. I have them all but like the finishing drum the best for getting the brushed steel finish. My Contour came with the finishing drum attached so you should get yours that way also. I think you will like it better than the 80 grit. Let me know how it works out.

I use it with the sanding drum and 80 or 120 grit paper. I have only used the ones from Eastwood and they last a long time.

Die grinder with 3m roloc wheels, green and red should work. I have a contour SCT from eastwood as well but would be difficult to access welded together.
