Patina on cast iron

Post by Mar0331 »

I have a large cast iron cauldron that's pretty rusty, I was wondering if it could be cleaned with muriatic acid and copper fx patina applied to it.

My initial thought would be that because of cast iron being porous, once the muriatic acid is applied, you would have a hard time getting it all out. and likewise for the copper fx, that you might get more of the greens by the time you get it completely removed from the pours.

There are several patinas that would work for adding color, but COPPER F/X? wouldn't be my 1st choice. Unless you polished it up and got it pretty shiny, you'd wind up with a pink cauldron. The "new penny" copper look is only achieved on very bright, polished (flap-disc'd) finish. It doesn't work well on a matte or satin substrate.
