Another Inkscape Question

Please see attached file. This has several eagles. I only want to cut the one on the right hand side with his wings spread out. I have been working in Inkscape to try to "break apart so I can delete the others but have been unsuccessful.

Can someone advise on how I can do this please? Please explain it like I'm six and perhaps give an illustration. I like to have something to go back to when I am practicing how to do it.

I have created a video on how to do what you want, fairly easy to do. I will post it in about an hour I need to upload it to the Google drive and it clear there before I and attach it here.

Every once in a while I get the itch to take another stab at Inkscape. I saw this post and though it would be perfect, something that's likely easy to do, I should try.

So I tried, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to do it. In CorelDRAW it's simple, 1 click, done. I give up on Inkscape again...for now.

the file posted opens/imports as an image, not an svg file for me. It is very grainy as well.

I tried to. It is not an SVG or an object. Best thing to do is a trace maybe.

The svg file you posted contains a bitmap image and not an editable vector file. You can select your image as shown below, then Path, Trace Bitmap to automatically trace your image to a resulting vector file. You can adjust the Brightness threshold until you find the best value which will give you a good result.

I got the best result by adjusting the Brightness threshold to 0.950. I did a single scan in Brightness Cutoff mode as shown in the attached image.

Here are the steps I used to edit the eagles. Once you have the one you want combined as shown, then you can decide if you want to cut this as a negative or positive. A negative would be if you are cutting it into a larger piece of material - say a table top or sign. A positive would be if you are cutting it as a stand alone piece where the outer perimeter of the eagle shape is the outside cut for your part.

By the way, when you do the Path, Trace Bitmap the vector file will end up on top of the bitmap file. So you have to click on it and drag it off to the side. Then you can click on the bitmap image again (select it) if you wish to do another trace. Then just repeat the process until you achieve an acceptable trace.

Nice video Tom. We both used the same approach. Which version of Inkscape are you using? Your trace bitmap window has the sliding bars, and mine does not. Maybe I like yours better.

I am using 1.2 I think they may have 1.2.1 out not sure. They have made changes to the screen workings.

Thanks all for the help. I ended up using David's method and it worked perfectly.

While I have gotten the file where I want it now, I note you mentioned positive vs negative. Looking at the file now, I am noting the head is likely going to give me some troubles. If I am understanding your description of this correctly, I believe a positive would be best. Can you provide a little direction on how to accomplish this?

I am gaining knowledge on operating the actual table at a fairly rapid pace however, my skills in the inkscape arena are still developing and have a long way to go.

David shows thing that are very important when you are looking at a file and how to correct lines for a clean cut. To open up another way to look at a file if you wanted a different look is to make it a layered project. This would be to separate some of the inside sections to be cut as separate from a background cut. These then can be fastened to the background to complete the project. attached are some samples to show what I am talking about.

Tom - those are some great examples! Nice work. I had thought about suggesting a layered approach as well, but didn't want to complicate things for the OP as it sounds like he is just starting out and "testing his wings" - so to speak. Those are great suggestions.
