Help Needed PLEASE! Cannot open any dxf's in Inkscape

Post by goldwinger »

I have tried every possible that I can think of, I can NOT open a DXF file in Inkscape & see it,
to be able to do any modifications (Thats the only program I know how to use or have.)
Is there a program that will open a DXF and save it to a SVG file ? OR Convert a DXF to a SVG or Jpeg ?
Can anyone either tell me how this is done, What program I need, (everyone says open it in Inkscape)
I need someone to teach me or tell me Something Please !!!!
All the files that I have down loaded in PlasmaSpider are going to waste cause I CAN'T OPEN THEM "PLEASE HELP ME"[/b

Thank you for your Help in advance

i dont personally use inkscape but others have asked this question in the past and the solution given was to use freeware QCAD to convert dxf to svg

Convertio works and is free.
I just tried it out to be sure that it works. I uploaded a DXF to their server, they converted it to svg, opened in inkscape.
press the red "Choose Files" button and search for the file on your computer, then choose what type of file you wanna convert it to.
Worked like a champ!

It's easier than that. Use File Import
Select "File" from the menu and from the options select "Import." In the dialog that appears, change the "Files" of type from "All Inkscape Files" to "AutoCAD DFX R13 (*dxf)."
After it opens zoom in click on Stroke then Stroke Style and use something like .005 for Width to make the lines thinner.

Ok That is way easier!
I use designedge (plasmacam software) to do my editing, so I never open a DXF in inkscape, so nice tip there....
But...……...I find Inkscape easier to convert from a clipart file to a DXF than DesignEdge, so I usually do it backwards from the inquiry.
Yes it is much easier to just open right in inkscape. I tried it with one of my DXF files and it was a snap!

Old Iron, thanks for the tip. I am finding that it only works on about 1 out of 4 files though. Am I missing something? Converting through Qcad is kind of a pain.

You would think that DXF is a standard but it is not there are different version and therefore different formats. Not all software work with all others. Converting is a pain but sometimes a workaround gets you where you want to be.
