SVG will not import into SheetCam - HELP

Post by exapprentice »

Hi

Please can someone help with this file
have an SVG drawing (yes its mine) that opens in Inkscape and can be worked on, saved as an SVG but it will not load into SheetCam
I have tried other SVG files I have created and they all load in straight away (all and every one of them)

I only ever import SVG's into SheetCam and eveyrthing apart from this single file opens :?

The only noticeable difference is that when I import into SheetCam on all the other files (good files) you get a box that comes up showing progress of the import, with this particular file nothing happens at all

I did save as a DXF in Inkscape and that loaded into SheetCam but with lines that need removing

I have attached the file (hopefully) to see if someone else has better luck or can tell me what is wrong (or what I am doing wrong) with the file and why it will not load into SheetCam :?:

I am now at a loss trying to find that stupid thing I have not done

I tried opening your file in SheetCam, but it wouldn't open for me either. I then tried opening it in Corel Draw, but it locked up the program to where I had to force quit it. I don't know what is wrong with your file, but what ever it is, it's really bad.

Hi mcagauto

Thank you very much, your post is very much appreciated, thought I was going to have to start again from scratch

That did it, works a treat, opens in SheetCam, bit slow but it does load which is far far more than I could get it to do :(

Now please tell me what (I did) was wrong or what you did to get it back on track, I would really love to know what the issue was
Especially as "acourtjester" above had the same problem with the file :D

What I did in inkscape is.
I selected all, then went to object ungroup I did that several times. Then select all again and it shows two object I could only find one though, so I went to path then break apart and then selected just the parts that were needed and copied them. Then opened a new page and pasted them there. I have had problems like this before and have no clue what caused it. I hope you can follow what I did. I'm not a very good teacher. Hope you got your project finished.

Looking at Acourtjesters screen print, I can see several overlapping lines, like on the front of the back leg, and on the front of the back front leg. I suspect that is what is messing things up.

Hi Steve

I agree with what you can see but I believe those extra lines are from saving as a DXF as they are not on the original SVG, they just appeared after saving as a DXF for me as well :?

Thanks to mcagauto and his instructions above ;)
I have now been able to replicate his actions and have recovered the original SVG file and all is now wel :D

Just had this same problem. It was really weird. After I followed the steps above some trash showed up from parts that I had redrawn that were hung up in the drawing somehow. Copied to a new svg and it worked fine. Just wanted to add to the conversation. Thanks for the tip.

This old thread saved my bacon. Thank you. I "saved as" in inkscape to DXF and it fixed my issue as well.

My issue for someone in the future was as follows. Made a change to a good svg file that I had no issues importing before so that the sheet of material was being better utilized. Sheetcam somehow still pulled in the old file from before the modification. Tried grouping and ungrouping. Even restarting the computer. The file completely disappeared when I converted to path. Saving to DXF fixed the problem.

Do not know if this is what happened, when you have the new/corrected file and then went to "save as". It will bring up the save function and the file name will be highlighted, if by any chance you hit a single key on the keyboard that new will be the saved name for the new/corrected file. And the original funky SVG file will not be changed and if you go info SheetCam and gave it what you thought was the new file (old name) that is what you will get :o . Not saying that is what happened but could have, to see if that did happen look in the folder for a single letter named SVG file.

acourtjester, that is exactly what I thought was happening. So did a save as and changed the file name. Checked in sheetcam and it was still the old file. So I opened it again in Inkscape and it was the updated file. Very strange indeed. But since finding this thread, I export as dxf.
