You don't have to have a laser or have one attached to use the program. If it gives a list you can just pick one. I think there might be something where you can tell it you will add one later. I have no laser and just picked one of the options or entered a name manually. I can't remember since it has been a few years since I installed it. I do have it on multiple computers, as I recall.

When It first came out, Robert Johnson was the one that put me onto it. It was useful for doing certain kinds of offsets that Plasmacam Design Edge could not do. But it had no provision for export as dxf. The LightBurn site had a section where they asked for user input and features users would like to have added. I asked for dxf export, and told them I would purchase it if they added the dxf export (I was using the trial version at the time). The acted on my request and added the dxf export, so I went ahead and paid for a license. It is also pretty good and auto trace. But I still prefer Inkscape for that function.

For those who don't have Design Edge, LightBurn is a great tool for linking/joining files. Import to LightBurn and then export file from LightBurn (no editing required) and it will link/join files like this automatically so they play nice with Inkscape.

Tom - I am curious what program you used to open the dxf file for the screen shot you posted? When I convert from R14 to R13 with QCad and open with Inkscape, I don't see the same thing?
Thanks,
David

This is another example of different software packages seeing a file differently.
First image is from SheetCam for the same file, my work area is 4'X4' I open that file and the small square is my work area???? I fine with SheetCam where there is an open path the start position cannot be moved around the shape. Than I know there is an open somewhere in the path.
Next if from the CAD program I use called TurboCad deluxe 2018, when I highlight the outer edge and enlarged the drawing it showed the break in the path. It did not show until I enlarged it to look are it better. When I see that I use a tool called "line length" this allows me to grab a line and extend it to close the break. This has also helped me with the 3-D program I use to close drawing so I am extrude them, if they ore open I cannot extrude them.

Tom, I opened with Sheetcam and I am not seeing the break. What am I doing wrong, or am I looking in the wrong place?
Thanks,
David

How are you coming with LightBurn? Were you able to get it installed and working so you can make some progress with your original flower welcome sign project?

David I used the CAD program I have to show the broken line, it is in the location you show with the loop around it. I show a brake and your don't.
In Lightburn when I enlarge it way up it looks like there is an overlap in that area, I cannot get the nodes to show to be sure.

Tom - which CAD program are you using? Perhaps I will check it out.

Here is what I see using LightBurn. It looks like the outside of the bottle opener is an open path, but with the ends overlapping. Easy fix by just moving one of the end nodes and connecting to the node at the other end.

Select all and export as svg.
export as svg.jpg
Open with Inkscape.
export as svg 1.jpg
Object, Fill and Stroke if you wish to add colors.
export as svg 2.jpg
