PM65 resetting errors

Post by djreiswig »

PM65 with CPC & RS-485 & machine torch.
When I get an error code that locks the machine and requires power cycle to clear, if I cycle the main switch too quickly it comes back up with an error and is showing 0A. It seems like unless I wait like 30 seconds before turning the switch back on and get the Hypertherm splash when it starts it won't reset correctly. Is this normal?

This is normal. You should always wait 30 seconds before turning the power switch back on.

But why? If I go to my Mach screen and tab the fly out and change the amps from there to a number they is valid it works fine. I guess I just don't understand why it goes to 0 amps.

It has something to do with the rs-485 connection. I opened it up and there are 2 wires going to an aux switch on the main switch. If I set an error by removing the cap and then break only the aux switch wires for a second it will reset. If I have the rs-485 connected and do the same procedure it gives me 0-11 error and goes to 0A.
In the service manual it appears to mean that the remote commands are invalid. So that would explain why I can clear it with the Mach flyout.
I'm wondering why it resets when I wait until the DSP board led inside the plasma blinks and I get the splash screen when I power it up. I thought it was a Mach thing, but it must be something with the rs-485 not refreshing correctly in the plasma. Must be some sort of bug.

I'm sure it has to do with the RS-485. The plasma cutter has power on the input caps for some time after the power is shut off. This means the DSP, control board, and RS-485 board still have some power to them after the switch is turned off for a short time. Hence the 30 second rule. Its only listed under the generator section of the manual to wait 30 seconds on power cycle but if you talk to tech support they will tell you it applies all the time. If you cycle the power to fast the unit will not fully reset.

I came up with a workaround. I made a button that changes the DRO for the amps to a different number and then back to the setting it was at. It gets rid of the error.
