Plasma voltage divider wire size.

Post by Adamsmetalshop »

Hello all, I'm wondering what wire gauge I should use for the 50:1 voltage divider.
I'm running a hypertherm 85 with the proma 150thc . I understand if I was using raw arc voltage I'd need a short run close to the plasma as possible and thicker wire that can handle the amperage, but what's the rules on using the divider voltage from my CPC port ? I assume its 1/50th the voltage along with a far lower amperage and could use 18 gauge wire? Thanks in advance!

16g or 18g will be just fine

If you are using raw arc voltage then 26 gauge wire with an outer jacket insulation rating of at least 300 volts. Using an external voltage divider then the divider should be mounted at the Plasma cutter. Wiring from the voltage divider (50:1 output to the Proma) should be 26 gauge or larger. Raw voltage can reach 300 volts DC, divide that by 50 and that is what you see at the output of the 50:1 voltage divider. Jim Colt
