48" x 48" welding table fume hood

Post by tinspark »

4'x4' welding fume hood DXF attached below if needed!!- Lord knows I did!

I have been battling smoke from welding for a few years in my home shop. I tapped into my existing CNC exhaust line and added (2) dampers. I never weld and burn on my CNC table at the same time.
I drew up parts with a 1" standing seams where they connect together. The flat strips are the cap strips which bend and flatten at 180 degrees. They drive on over the standing seams. I then riveted the parts together.
It actually turned out really well, looks kinda cool, but most importantly, works fantastic!
I also made a box on top and cut it in afterwards after I aimed it at my duct tap-in with the damper set-up, then made my final duct connection. .
the box is included with a 10' round opening and a collar. I made it from 20 gauge galvanized and (1-1/2 sheets of 48" x 120")

Yeah my shop Fills up with smoke fast too!
Was using cartridge respirators before I built this thing, which were harder to find than gold during the pandemic. Even the N-95's are crazy hard to get!
But this gets 100% of the smoke out of my shop. I even spray painted a buddies brake pedal after I modified it for him and it captured all of the aerosol from that too! Super happy with it!!

Nice job! I could sweat I've seen these photos before, perhaps on another forum. In any case, great work!

No pics of build, but it is all 1" standing (1" bent 90 degrees) seam connected together with a cap strip. Cap strip is a 2" wide piece of metal folded in the center at 180 degrees. and flattened a bit. everything is in the attached DXF file from my OP..

Also, you could take a screen shot of my pattern and paste it into a word document and print out the pattern on paper, cut it out with scissors and fold and tape up a mini hood out before you burn metal.. Heck blow it up and make each piece the size of teh paper if you want!! I have actually done this before and it works
