target tree

Here is a target tree I made a while back with some ar500 3/8 plate and some angle iron. Good pastime if you enjoy plinking and reloading.

I am preparing to build one of these, but does anyone have any experience with them? wondering about the thickness/weight of the targets for various calibers. Im considering cutting from a couple different thicknesses, or making the "tree" angle adjustable. I would like to be able to use it for .22-.45 cal.

I used 3/8 ar500 steel for this project. I shot .22 all the way up to a .460 hand guns and haven't seen any deterioration in the steel. Rifles from a .204 to a 300RUM. The only rifles that showed a little pitting was the .204 and the .223. make sure you make a few degree tilt on the target holder to deflect the bullets to the ground. If your going to shoot hand guns smaller than 9mm I would still use ar500 but maybe 1/4 inch. the smaller hand guns don't have enough energy to flip the 3/8 ar500. The targets lift out so you could cut different thickness for what ever caliber your using and use the same target holder. On the large calibers .44 on up I found the impact some times lifts the target shaft out of the bottom holder ring on mine. This maybe can be fixed by increasing the length of the shaft a little, moving the holding rings a little closer, or use a pipe between the holders to prevent the target shaft from jumping out of the bottom holder. Just an after thought.
