Infinity Heart DXF Design

Post by woodworker2001 »

New to the site and here is my first file share. I am planning to cut this for my wife for Christmas. I am sure that the names won't help you but maybe it will inspire some ideas. I have not cut it yet so make sure you check it if you go to do anything with it. I will also trace just the infinity heart later this week without the names so maybe someone can use that a little easier.

When I opened the dxf it opened up like the file above, but the cdr file was not that choppy around the left side.... can anyone tell me why it exported that way.... the dxf had a bunch of node that I had gotten rid of in the cdr file.....

I have a friend that wants me to make this for him for their anniversary. Need to change the names to Karla & Dave. He also wants the date 9-12-92 incorporated. I'm thinking in the bottom of the heart.
I'm green with inkscape, but was going to give it a go. When I open the dxf it looks all choppy. Can anyone give me a hand with this? He wants it 24"-30" across.

It also looks like the bottom right part of the heat needs to be attached to the infinity.

Here are the two files from above cleaned up and converted to svg ready for editing with Inkscape. I will take a look later this evening to see if I can get the new names and date attached to the infinity heart, or at least get you started in the right direction editing this with Inkscape.

I will have a look at this later this evening and hopefully post some screen shots showing a simple method to accomplish this using Inkscape.
I would normally do it with Design Edge, but that is sort of cheating since most folks don't have access to that program.

I tried playing with inkscape a little bit, but I'm not even sure how to do text. Definitely a learning curve.
I'm okay with cheating. :Yay

Here is something that might work for you. The choice of script fonts is limited in DE, but If you know the name of the font used for the previous example I could possibly find it and import to DE and edit this to include the proper script font. The only problem I see here is that the dashes between the numbers for the date will fall out when cut. If you are doing a layered piece, then these could be added to the backer.

Here is another version with some script font from Inkscape. This may be closer to the original.

We looked at some other designs and are thinking maybe switching the hyphens to periods set on the arch.

Should the part of the heart under Dave be attached to the infinity? It is on the other side, so I'm wondering if it would look better.

Almost. The dots should be above the arch, not within it. Just joined to it like the letters.

Perfect. Is the other one traceable?

Any pointers on how to do this sort of thing in inkscape?

This one is workable using a combination of auto trace and manual editing. The first step for me is to open with Paint.net and adjust brightness/contrast.
You can follow along with these screen shots to see the method I would use. There are other approaches, as Tom can attest to, so this is just one way to do it. There are probably a few details left out here, but ask if you get stuck and we will try to help you.
