New to Plasma and Need Help

Post by SSkaggs »

I have a special order for a fire pit. I have it designed in svg format in inkscape, but I am unsure how to scale my pieces so that they match up for a 30 inch opening. I also have pictures of one in this style. Any help is greatly appreciated. My welder doesn't like gaps :HaHa The long square pieces with the tabs should be 6 inches for height. Again, thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Stacy,
Why don't you go ahead and post your svg file for your design, which I assume is different that the photos you posted. Are you attempting to scale it in Inkscape, or after you have converted it to dxf format? When you say "The long square pieces with the tabs should be 6 inches for height" I also assume you are referring to your svg file, which we would need to see in order to know exactly what "long square pieces" you are talking about.

Some thing that may help, in Inkscape you can scale drawings. When forming select the shapes and go to 6 sided for hex parts, rotate the part so you sides are vertical as shown in the attached image. Use the site to get sizes for your hex shapes, then lock the aspect ratio tool in Inkscape and enter the width dimension into the width box. This will give you the correct size. there should be a site that will calculate what the sizes of each part to make the fire pit you want.
https://hexagoncalculator.apphb.com/ for hex sizes.

Thank you guys so much for the assistance. My svg file is in the zip folder under the last picture I posted. I'm still learning some things with inkscape so your diagram was fantastic for me to know where to lock the size.

There are some great vids on youtube for inkscape. Just search what you want to do and put the word inkscape in the search. Ex. "creating radius corners in Inkscape"
Plus acourtjester knowledge with inkscape is second to none.

Here is a scaled version of your fire pit in a zipped dxf format for the 6" square height you were looking for in ver2.

FirePit ver2.zip

One of your panels is going to have several dropouts as they require bridging. I played with the bridging and separating a few of the branches a bit to avoid drops with zipped ver3.

try using a copper chill, sometimes called a welding spoon or in simple terms a dissimilar material heat sink....

if you search for any of those terms on Google you may get some tips filling gaps or filling in holes

Thank you so much. I did cut out the one I had and I did have those drop outs. I was able to weld them in and clean them up so they are not noticeable. I wish I had checked here again before I cut it out. I am definitely going to use yours that you did for my next one. I wish I had remembered to take a picture of it before they picked it up, but I was so busy that I completely forgot to.
