Mach3 and one strange torch height problem

Ok so I got robbed when I bought this table as I got the last one delivered before Chris went dark. So far I had to make my own replacement head for the torch and fix a couple minor things.

Since cut one this thing has run high and slowly gotten higher. Now it starts, plunges, then as soon as it starts to cut will go to .785" every time. This is with the cut height changed in the tool on sheetcam to -.05".

What I've figured out so far. With the torch touching the steel it's all but at zero on the Z. Toss a piece of quarter on the steel and touch it, .250 or very close so it seems it knows it shit on that end. I turn the thc off in mach3 and start the cycle and it goes to, you guessed it, .785.

Any ideas on where to look next? I have another laptop coming in tomorrow that has another copy of mach3 on it that's never been plugged into the table to try.

With torch touching the steel how far out are you on the DRO? Is there a place to set the tool length in your setup and is it correct? Maybe your just .780" out on your tool length.

Zero or really close with the torch on the steel.


I also tried the other copy of mach3 with a fresh made file with the same result.

Are you using SheetCam to generate your G-code, if so you may want to look at this.

I checked that in both copies of sheetcam and they were both zero. One had the material thickness off.

Ok that was just something that popped into my head with your stated problem. But you still may have a problem with the post processor you are using in SheetCam, having some odd movement in it that adds the movement you are seeing. In the post processor there is a group of commands that deal with the Z movement around the start of cut operation, called "On Open Down" see attached. You can look at this by going in SheetCam to the Options tab and then the Machine tab. This is where you select the post processor you want to used, in that menu there is an edit button. If you click on that it will open the post processor for you to look at, scroll down to the "On Open Down" section and see if there is a command like G1 Z .785

There's other lines in but the Z lines are identical in my file.

Could someone send me a cut file for a hypertherm 45xp to try so I can see if there might be some off the wall anomaly in my copy of sheetcam? 16ga mild is what I have on hand.

Keep playing with this thing trying to chew it finer. I ran two files on a dry run (torch off) and the torch stayed down. As soon as I turned the torch on and went to run the file it climbed to .550 before I hit estop.

This is with thc off in mach3

There is, it started with me wanting a file to test and ended with figuring out the issue mostly. The thc voltage was set at 125 while actual is in the 90s causing the continuous rise. Now I'm play with getting the thc voltage right so it maintains the files set cut height.

Someone asked you for something but you seem to have ignored it. I would have asked for the same thing.

You are using sheetcam correct? Right click on the .tap file and select open with. Then select notepad. Copy and paste what is in the text file.
