Help with x3 please

Hi. Could somebody please help me with importing and exporting files and using the dxf tool.When you download a dxf off of this site or any other as far as that goes does it not remain a dxf.Than why a dxf tool? When you export a file to use in Sheetcam what do you save it as? When you save it in a dxf format why would it not become a dxf file ready to use in SC? The longer I've gone the more confused I've become.
