upgrade to hypertherm 45xp

Post by azindianrider »

So I had a cutmaster 52 and changed to a 45xp. so far what a mess. I expected issues but the cut quality is terrible. I used all the standard settings and its crap. my cuttmaster was running about 65ipm and now into the 200s. The holes are oblong the squares are round. The lines are squiggly.

I have one of the eagle plasma tables, sheetcam and Mach 3. What am I missing?

I know it will get better but hopefully someone can save me some aggravation.

That's a bummer.

So why are you going from 65 ipm to 200ipm?

Sounds like you may be following the Hypertherm cut charts but your cnc table can't produce good results at that high of travel speed.

If that's the case just find what speed the table cannot produce round holes and straight lines and reduce your amperage to match a speed that's a little slower than that.

Just cause using a 45 amp tip doesn't mean you need to run 45 amp. I routinely run finecuts at 30amps on 22 and 24 ga sheets as that gets me around 300ipm where my table makes a quality cut. Just takes trial and error to find the right settings, do some straight line tests at lower amps and feed to find the right volts etc.

that is what the hypertherm calls out as the correct speed. I ran my cuttmaster at 40 amps instead of 60

Just slow things down. Try using the low speed cut charts found here https://xnet.hypertherm.com/Xnet/librar ... =HYP189352

Show us some pics of the cuts, let us know the material type and thickness. What is the max recommended cut speed (not traverse speed) where your machine is stable? Do you have a torch height control? What consumable parts are you using? Provide more info and we'll get you cutting with better quality and longer consumable life than your previous system, assuming your machine and height control are up to the task. I know the Powermax is. Jim Colt

The plasma cutter is right out of the box. so the consumables are Hypertherm. (not the fine cut), Proma 150 height control w/floating head. Max speed is 600 ipm, 291.6 oz-in Nema 23 stepper motors. 14 ga steel plate material. Ill get some pictures up tonight.

I dropped the amperage and changed the CV, look ahead and have it slow to 80% in the corners. Has helped but interestingly when I cut out a square the cut part is ok but the hole where it was cut is still very rounded.

I would be surprised if there are any problems with the 45xp. I have used that very unit on two different tables with no issue and using the Hyp cut charts. I was so impressed with it, I retired the 45xp to hand cutting/gouging and got a 65 for the cnc work. Having owned and used old Esab, Miller and Thermal Dynamics, I will never use anything but Hypertherm......they are way more gooder!

I am not a guru but, my cut path rules are set to 60% on circles less than 1.5" diameter. On my old machine, if you tried to push the feed too high, holes would get wonky and fillets would get squared off. Maybe you can post up your path rules as well.

I have never had issue with the standard 45a consumables on any sheet. I have however had issues with 45a Finecuts on 14g-10g blowing back. This is a known issue and for me was remedied by increasing cut height to .075 and increasing the voltage setting for the THC by about 4v (for my equipment) until the electrode gets a bit of a divot in it, then back to book specs.

150ipm seemed a little fast for 45 amps so I checked the Hypertherm chart and saw that they suggest 85ipm. You must be looking at different chart than me. See below.
