Hoist thoughts...
I'm going to be relocating my plasma set up to another part of my shop.
I'm thinking of putting a rack above my table for several reasons..
1) Mount my plasma cutter, air filters and moisture collection tank then my refrigerated air dryer..
2) The rack will mount my electrical connections too.
3) Thinking of an overhead hoist just for the table..
4" Above the hoist set up maybe a mezzanine for a few sheets of metal or possible equipment storage..
I'm only thinking of maybe a 1500lb lift, I won't buy a super cheap one for this.
I have a forklift to load the table this would be a back up plan..
How short can I make the roller set up and hoist??
What have you guys used.
Thanks in advance

Re: Hoist thoughts...
Basically a rack around my plasma table.. As you are facing the X on the left side will be my plasma generator, air filters, air dryer, electrical etc...
4 posts and and racking that will have a mezzanine on it..
Under the mezzanine frame work will be a hoist set up to pick up sheets and put them on the table.
Any better???

Something like this only different?
I thought of something similar as well with pallet racking over the table and an I-beam trolly type of thing.
All you equipment on the shelf above would be pretty sweet and clear up some space.

Yes, you are on the right track..
Moving table to part of the shop that's more difficult to heat so I'm thinking about enclosing it with strip curtains to keep it just above freezing.
I have a down draft but when she's super cold the grease adds quite a bit of drag.
Plus I hate shivering when I'm trying to cut stuff.

Re: Hoist thoughts...
That would be an interesting set up but I'm not sure I'd want to get into that elaborate of a set up.
Though one part kicked my thoughts into gear..
My first thought is what i'm attaching..
2nd thought( not drawn) is one of the posts as the jib crane style, it would add versatility in where the sheet metal stack would have to be located.

Re: Hoist thoughts...
I think everyone would love to have such an overhead crane in their shops. The limitation is ceiling height, of course. If the ceiling is only 8 or 9 feet, that doesn't leave a lot of room for such a device..cstroke wrote: ↑Sun Aug 14, 2022 10:33 am That would be an interesting set up but I'm not sure I'd want to get into that elaborate of a set up.

If course, there are many ways to accomplish this. for instance, you could dig a pit next to the table, and put in a concrete floor and poured walls.
Then you create a hydraulic rising rack that comes up out of the ground, bringing the shelf with (n gauge) material to the level of the table surface, and simply slide a sheet over to the table! Then it drops down to restore the floor surface next to the table.
Too "Batman" for you?

Re: Hoist thoughts...
I've seen guys cheat the roller system by putting the rollers on top of the beams and it works fairly well.
I can't keep my floor clean and I can only imagine what a pit would acquire.. It would be an incredible set up though wouldn't it.

Re: Hoist thoughts...
The bottom of the pit could be like a hopper, angled down to a corner that has a 4" PVC connection up to a shop vac. I don't think collection of dust and dirt would be much of a problem.

We use jib cranes with two magnets to lift sheets on and off our tables.
Works good.

Re: Hoist thoughts...
As long as the magnets can lift the weight, and the bow of the sheet metal does not peel the sheet OFF of the magnets, that works great!

Re: Hoist thoughts...
When I worked for another company I had a rep talk to us about magnet safety.. It was interesting..
Amazing how much a magnet can hold if they are used together and how unsafe trying to get by with even a strong magnet with thinner material..
