2 layererd sign

Post by Improvise »

Hi all,
Was wondering how you guys attach the metal for a 2 layered sign? The sign is to be installed on a trailer so will obviously be outside. Is there a higher chance of a 2 layered sign rusting out faster due to the fact moisture can get stuck between the 2 layers? I was thinking of using 1.2mm mild steel. Any thicker and the 2 layers will get quite heavy.
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks guys!

What is the overall size of your sign? Steel or aluminum?

1280mm x 600mm. I was going to use 1.2mm cold rolled steel but could use 2mm aluminium if you think thats a better idea

Space it with nylon washers. Powdercoat with zinc primer first then the paints.. Finish will look good for many years..

If you have the space behind the sign I would use a through bolt attachment for the front layer, plug weld bolts to the front layer.
I have not used powder coat zinc primer but if it is like normal powder coating I don't think paint will stick for long. Just use powder coating for color finish. IMHO

Two part process. Zinc powdercoat after surface prep(sandblast) not baked fully, then powdercoat your top coat and fully cure... Sorry if I wasn't clear.
This is a finish for outdoors, it lasts longer than powdercoating without the zinc primer.

Not to highjack but I just backed it up with a piece of plastic. Use contact cement. I painted my signs. I live in North East, plow with this truck and have no corrosion or rusting so far.

I wanted to attach the two pieces directly to each other (without a gap between the two) using some sort of adhesive if possible. The sign will be attached to the trailer across the caged part so without the contrasting coloured backing piece I think the design will be lost.
The idea was to powder coat / spray paint the two pieces (actual sign and the blue backing piece) then after curing glue them together. When installed to the trailer it will also be tek screwed into trailer frame so will help with the two pieces staying together also.
Would this be ok?

Silicone? The screws should hold it together, silicone will keep it from vibrating and wearing the paint off.

That's a great idea of using the plastic backer with contact cement. It looks great and has apparently held up very well. Nice work!
