Laying out duct for cutting

Post by ROKCRLER »

I need help from the group. I need to make these parts, but am having issues with drawing the parts out in 2D.
We usually draw them out on paper templates and hand cut but would like to make the process more efficient.
I'm using QCad and tried to use this template: https://www.templatemaker.nl/en/miter/ but i cant get my head wrapped around it.
I hope someone can shed some light.

This will be made from 16ga and one seam weld along with the pie cut welds.

Teach a noob some tricks please.

just the elbow?

or the whole lot?

(I'll have a look through my ductwork fab books, there used to be some free lobster back software but it has been removed)

I presume you just want to cut it from flat sheet and roll it,

Thanks Robert!

The plan is to do the whole duct, in sections if needed and yes, cut on sheet and rolled in the slip roll.

I did run across this earlier https://sgsfab.com/2019/03/05/pipe-cutt ... -cut-pipe/ going to give it a try as well.

Not sure if this will be of any use or not, but I've used to to make some pipe joints and it worked well. I'm not sure if you could make elbows or not.

Got the duct finally done.
We used the Flat Pattern app to create the 90, it for some reason only produced 3 pieces instead of 4 or even 5 like Roberts.
Ended up cutting the 3 piece part twice for two middles.

The elbow came out great
Duct 90.jpg
The offset had to be done old school... as we couldn't get the app to work correctly

Overall, it was a great project, learned a lot, any my buddy even 'taught' me old school layout

Thats awesome...thanks guys... im going to see what the perpetual license cost is.
A good friend of mine is in the duct business, these were for him. if the software i what it seems, he wont have to layout by hand anymore and i can cut for him.... hes still using hand shears and handheld plasma.

Hypertherm doesn't state the price for a perpetual license at their site, so I would assume it is pricey. I'm guessing 3-5K range.

I got a reply from Hypertherm, perpetual license is $2200.00 with annual maintenance plan or $2000 without.

Very true!
I have been playing with Solid Edge 3d and found several videos on how to make the ductwork, seems nice but not nearly as easy as the apps or method you posted.

Thanks for all the help though! :Like

What you can do is what I do.
I cut for a few companies, the one has cutting equipment and the other I do the cutting.
Anyhow every time I use the program it costs them 10 bucks.
if they have 20 different items its 10 bucks each. 20 of the same its 10 total.
I've had the program for 2 years and probably cut 1-2 times a month for them. I'm fairly close to having the program paid for which means when I need it for myself it's free.
This afternoon I used it for 8 different laterals and 6 cones.

Thats is genius.
The above parts were for a friend with a sheet metal fab shop, his bread and butter is cotton gin work, with industrial fab as well.
Hes used to laying out and cutting out by hand, but since he's only 1 mile away and i have a table, we both figured we can share the piece of the pie.
Who knows, it might can be a write off for his business?:?:
